“Trenton Makes, the World Takes.” This catchy motto of New Jersey’s once booming industrial capital city now serves as a reminder of what Trenton was so many years ago. In the years following the city’s gradual decline, Trenton has faced a number of challenges. Today, nonprofit organization Greater Trenton strives to lift up the Garden State city and expand on its many opportunities.
During this episode of Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato, four members of the nonprofit organization, Greater Trenton, join Steve Adubato, PhD., to talk about the goals for New Jersey’s capital city as well as ways to revitalize the city’s downtown area. Greater Trenton is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on advancing economic revival efforts in New Jersey’s capital city.
The episode’s guests include Bernie Flynn, president and CEO of NJM Insurance Group, and co-chair of Greater Trenton; George Sowa, CEO of Greater Trenton; Anthony J. “Skip” Cimino, partner of Kaufman Zita Group, and co-chair of Greater Trenton; and Eric Jackson, mayor of the City of Trenton.
“[Greater Trenton] is dedicated to the revitalization essentially of the downtown core (of Trenton),” said Cimino. “And what we were looking for was, quite frankly, some stability in the City of Trenton’s government. And as things were unfolding, we saw that coming with a new mayor in Mayor Eric Jackson. We felt that within the framework of the downtown core, we could find a place where Trentonians as well as others within the region could live, work and play.”
Cimino added that many of the businesses along the Route 1 region agreed that a significant number of employees and citizens, particularly millennials, were looking for an area where they could reside and be part of a community. A project such as this would increase the working population and improve the city’s nightlife and financial stability.
