People know New Jersey for its diners; so to make a name for yourself as the new diner on the block, you have to stand out. That’s the challenge facing the brand new Metro Diner in East Brunswick. But the Central Jersey eatery is ready to face this tall task head-on by offering favorite diner classics, plus new twists on traditional dishes.
Metro Diner is opening its first NJ location on March 12. Although new to the Garden State, many already know the national restaurant chain for its comfort food and large portions. “Guests feel at home when they come to Metro Diner because we welcome them as if they’re coming to our own house,” says East Brunswick Metro Diner Managing Partner Mike Killeen. “Metro Diner is known as the place where ‘the locals eat’ and we hope to be the new go-to destination where our East Brunswick diners turn into regulars.”
The Metro Diner Legacy
Since opening in 1992 – the original location is in Jacksonville, Florida – Metro Diner has earned numerous awards; their accolades from local outlets include best diner, best family dining, best fried chicken and best breakfast. The diner was even featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri.
The 4,500-square foot NJ location offers breakfast, lunch and dinner; guests can either dine-in, Metro Diner can seat up to 130 people, or order takeout. Despite the large portion sizes, which are perfect for sharing, most dishes cost less than $15.
What to order
Breakfast options include Croissant French Toast and Cinnamon Roll Pancakes. That latter comes with two fluffy cinnamon and sugar pancakes, topped with cream cheese icing, candied pecans and cinnamon butter. Then there’s the Breakfast Pie, a Metro Diner original, with eggs, cheese, mushrooms, onions, peppers and red-skinned potatoes. Of course, you have to try their famous Fried Chicken & Waffle dish; it’s half a fried chicken and a Belgian waffle, with sweet, strawberry butter and their signature sweet and spicy sauce.
Meanwhile, lunch fare ranges from Avocado Veggie Wraps to a Fried Chicken Plate. (Half a fried chicken, mashed red-skinned potatoes and brown gravy, veggies and a biscuit.) Finally, dinner entrees feature picks like Chicken Parmesan or the Pulled Pork Mac Stack; a half-pound of BBQ pulled pork piled over creamy mac and cheese. Plus a cheddar cornbread waffle topped with maple butter.
