Garden State Wine Growers Association

TBestofNJ-com Client's Website Buttonhe Garden State Wine Growers Association is the statewide organization for the advocacy and promotion of the New Jersey wine industry. Founded in 1984, the association has driven exponential growth through wine education initiatives, cooperative marketing campaigns and a slate of annual events dedicated to taking our wines across New Jersey, encouraging enthusiasts to visit our wineries.

Comprised of over 50 members, the GSWGA produces wine festivals and wine trail weekends to market the locally-produced wines of the Garden State. The Association also addresses the legislative affairs and public relations of the state’s wine industry.

The New Jersey Wine Competition is an annual event organized for the Garden State Wine Growers Association by Dr. Gary Pavlis of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. In 2017, Plagido’s Winery of Hammonton earned Winery of the Year honors for the second consecutive year. Other notable awards include The Governor’s Cup for Best Grape wine, which went to Fox Hollow Vineyards of Holmdel for their 2014 Cabernet Franc, which also won Best Vinifera wine. Terhune Orchards of Princeton won the Governor’s Cup for fruit wine for their non-vintage Blueberry wine and Sharrott Winery of Blue Anchor took home the Governor’s Cup for Best Dessert wine for their 2013 Wicked Port, which also won for Best Hybrid wine. The association also serves as an educational and informational resource for current and prospective grape growers, with the overarching goal of improving the quality and quantity of grapes and wine being produced in New Jersey. This is accomplished in part by working closely with the Rutgers Agricultural Experimentation Station network throughout the state, and the newly formed Rutgers Wine Grape Resource Center, chaired by Dr. Dan Ward.

GSWGA wine festivals are often held in idyllic state or county park settings while wine trail weekends are held in participating winery tasting rooms statewide.

New Jersey wines continue to achieve greater acclaim and awareness. The GSWGA proudly stands behind its member wineries, and actively works to improve the environment that New Jersey wineries and grape growers operate in. Through education initiatives, branding campaigns and interfacing with state agencies, the GSWGA acts as the comprehensive engine of growth for the New Jersey wine industry.
