Northern New Jersey is stepping up its sushi game. In fact, the new Sushi Kai restaurant in Fort Lee is not your average sushi joint; it’s an authentic, high-end omakase experience using fish straight from the Tovosu Market in Japan. The small space offers an air of exclusivity, seating just 25 patrons indoors (when open at max capacity).
“We wanted to capture a minimalistic and elegant vibe that makes you feel comfortable but special at the same time,” says Owner Simon Shargorodsky. Formerly housing L’Orange Bleue, the space features a complete renovation, including a thick oak sushi counter. Despite the limited indoor seating, you won’t find outdoor seating at Sushi Kai. “We believe that our product is best captured and preserved indoors,” Simon says.

Sushi Kai Delivers a True Omakase Experience
Sushi Kai serves high quality sourced ingredients alongside sauces made in-house by their team. “We take pride in offering omakase sushi, which allows the chef to hand-select each course for you,” Simon explains. “Our dining experience brings customers a freshly sourced, creative, and flavorful tasting menu. Each course is uniquely prepared to capture the quality and taste of our fish. The cuisine is unique and delicious.”
In particular, Sushi Kai serves a $120 dine-in tasting menu. The omakase includes about 15 courses of various fish, ranging from sea urchin to wild blue fin tuna; as well as A5 Miyazakigyu Wagyu beef. Takeout and delivery options include creative appetizers, maki, omakase, and a la carte options.
About the Owner
Simon, a Morganville resident, has spent his life in the restaurant business. His grandfather ran a Russian restaurant and nightclub, Odessa, for more than 20 years. “I always knew I wanted to share my passion for quality food with my community,” he says. He also owns Yuzu Kitchen in Manalapan Township, which serves poke bowls and ramen.
Sushi Kai is a dream come true for Simon, realizing his hope to open a high-end sushi restaurant. In fact, as soon as Yuzu Kitchen was in good standing, he got started on opening Sushi Kai. Not even a global pandemic could get in his way.
You can find Sushi Kai at 206 Main Street in Fort Lee. Look for them online to find hours, their full menu, and other info.
