The Palisades Interstate Park in Bergen County has so much to see, it can’t be done in one day. The 2,500-acre park nestles mostly along the Hudson River, and boasts over 30 miles of trails. (Which include woods, cliffs, and shorelines.) The park’s most distinguished attraction is also the latest entry in The Best NJ Hiking Trails: State Line Lookout in Alpine.
State Line Lookout is the highest point of the Palisades Interstate Park; it reaches an elevation of more than 500 feet and offers a stunning view of both the Palisades and Manhattan. The lookout itself is open year round, from dawn to dusk, and offers birdwatchers plenty to look at; in particular, the fall months offer a chance to spot hawks.

Alternate Routes
There are a number of parking areas for this hike, depending upon the preferred difficulty and length. For the easiest trip, there is parking available at State Line Lookout itself. (Look for the unnumbered exit off Palisades Interstate Parkway North.) Parking is also available by the Lookout Inn, also known as State Line Cafe, open daily year-round. There are signs and plenty of travel information near the lookout area.

But for those looking for a real hike, follow the paved Old Route 9W road north. This road continues for about two miles before ending near the New York border. This route leads to the lookout and beyond; for instance, after passing State Line Lookout, Old Route 9W links up with the Long Path (aqua trail marker). Following the Long Path left leads back behind the parking lot and south towards the Women’s Federation Monument; along the Forest View Trail (blue and white trail marker). Long Path itself continues miles south past several other points of interest, including the Alpine Lookout and Greenbrook Sanctuary; as well as Rockefeller Lookout and Allison Park. Its southern-most point finally ends near the base of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee.
Other Points of Interest
Meanwhile, taking Old Route 9W and then following Long Path on the right leads north. This relatively short hike goes to the New Jersey-New York border. After crossing into New York, Long Path links up with the Shore Trail (white trail marker). Shore Trail then leads down towards Peanut Leap Cascade along the Hudson River; and runs south throughout the entirety of Palisades Interstate Park. This trail ends at the Edgewater entrance of the park off Henry Hudson Drive, below Fort Lee Historic Park.

What’s noteworthy about this path is that it leads to the Great Stairs; a rock scramble directly below State Line Lookout that is difficult, and only recommended for experienced hikers. Beyond the Great Stairs, however, are notable points such as the Excelsior Picnic Area; in addition to the Alpine, Undercliff, Englewood, and Ross Deck picnic areas. The trail also leads to Huyler’s Landing, Carpenter’s Grove, and Hazard’s Ramp.
State Line Lookout
Of course, State Line Lookout hosts a number of trails and terrains to match most hiking desires. But it is also great for birdwatching, afternoon picnics, and general tranquility. Hiking boots are recommended for this trip, especially for the Shore Trail. In fact, the Forest View, Closter Dock, Huyler’s Landing, Dyckman Hill, and Carpenter’s trails can be rocky. It is important to be vigilant all along the cliffs and rocky areas. Likewise, though the Long Path is mostly flat, it is as its name implies: long. In other words, it’s important to plan ahead and pack the correct amount of water and snacks for the trip. Either way, State Line Lookout earns its place as one of The Best NJ Hiking Trails.
