The idea of a traditional, old-world tavern is mostly gone in the modern era. However, one new business in Burlington is bringing a bit of history back to the downtown Historic District. The Union House offers comfort food, cocktails, and more in a casual setting with plenty of seating.
“The vibe is quite cozy and comfortable, a complement to the tavern-style menu we offer,” says Steve Sommers; co-owner of the 7,800-square foot Union House. The eatery features two large bars, each seating more than 25 patrons. Meanwhile the dining room can accommodate 195 guests. They also plan to offer seasonal outdoor seating at tables in both the front and back of the building; the back area has a bar and picnic tables.

A Comforting Menu for Humble Travelers
The Union House proudly serves a menu of simple comforts. They offer items such as wings, French onion soup, and oysters. Popular sides include the charred broccolini and the homemade cheddar biscuits; Steve says the latter “are to die for”. Likewise, signature sandwiches include the Union House Burger and the Nashville Hot Chicken. The former comes with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and special sauce on a Brioche bun with fries.

Other entree favorites include the Fish and chips, pork chop, and short rib stroganoff. But don’t let the classic vibe dissuade trendy eaters; because the Union House also offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Finally, their dessert menu features items like the apple crisp, and an ice cream sandwich with homemade cookies.
Drinks for Sharing (on Social Media)
The Union House boasts a few Instagrammable beverages as well. “Our specialty cocktail menu has a been a big hit,” says co-owner Kat Bono. For instance, locals love the Gin and Jam, Bourbon Blackberry Smash, and Union House Mule. In particular, Co-owner Matt Bannon says he is a fan of the “In a Pear Tree” cocktail; it’s reposado, mezcal, spiced pear brandy, lime, gin, and pepper.
Of course, the tavern also offers Happy hour specials. They serve both drink and menu specials Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Those specials include the ‘Buck a Shuck,’ which is a dozen freshly shucked oysters for just $1.
