Ceru Curates Elevated Everyday Wear in Maplewood

Ceru logo

Clothing shoppers looking for their next unique boutique can head to Ceru in Maplewood. Unlike a trip to the mall that offers the same brands and styles everyone else is wearing, Ceru carries unique, elevated everyday wear that takes things to the next level.

The shop works with independent and emerging, up-and-coming designers from all over the world. These pieces aren’t mass produced; in fact, many are made by hand by intentional designs. “We strive to work with brands that are small batch, who often aim to have less of a harmful impact on the environment,” says Co-Owner Megan Sanders.

Emerging Brands, Enduring Style

Some designers available at Ceru include Kowtow, Mirth, Rachel Comey, Proche, and Atelier Delphine. One recent bestseller is a simple, thin turtleneck by Mijeong Park. They come in deep, rich colors and make a nice layering piece. “They instantly make anything chic,” Megan says.

Socks are also flying off the shelves. “One cannot underestimate a good sock,” as Megan puts it. In particular, they have socks from Italy in vibrant colors and patterns. But it’s their fine jewelry that Megan says is underappreciated. This includes beautiful, one-of-a-kind, delicate pieces made by artists from all over the country.

Lowkey Outfit

Additional items patrons will find at Ceru range from home décor like handwoven baskets from Mexico to ceramics from France. For more exotic items, just ask, as they can often order special pieces.

But Megan’s favorite items in store are their scarves. “During the winter, I wore one almost every day,” she says. Their seasonal collection of hand-painted scarves from Silvana Manetti are unique and buttery soft.

About Ceru

Ceru is a play on the color cerulean. “It was my favorite crayon color as a child,” Megan explains. “It was then I realized I had an affinity for unique color and design.”

Olga Top x Rita Row

Megan grew up in Colorado and studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She moved a few blocks from the store after living in Brooklyn. “I love the area,” she says. “It has such a heart. I wanted to be part of it.” She owns the shop with her husband, Diego Carranza. “We’re huge travelers and we’ve found many of the brands we carry through our international jaunts.”

The 800-square-foot space gives off “a moody European, lush Zen vibe.” Future plans include wine nights and book clubs.
