Humans are social creatures. But the COVID-19 crisis makes it difficult to meaningfully connect with those around us. With this in mind, many experts are raising concerns about how long periods of isolation can impact mental health. One counseling group in particular is helping build a plan of action to deal with the fallout of COVID-19.
During this episode of One-on-One with Steve Adubato, the show host speaks with Steve Margeotes, PhD, LPC, ACS. Margeotes is the executive director at Main St. Counseling in West Orange. Together, he and Adubato review the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on people’s mental health; for instance, how the demand for mental health services is increasing during the pandemic. The two further address the importance of finding ways to discuss daily challenges and stay in contact with loved ones.

Staying Ahead of Mental Health Concerns
Main St. Counseling Center was established 40 years ago. The center provides accessible and affordable counseling services to residents of Essex County and the surrounding areas. However, the counseling center continues to expand its services; it currently offers individual, couple, and family, as well as group counseling. The center also provides special programs for youth, seniors, and veterans.
Margeotes tells Adubato that many mental health issues are escalating during the pandemic. He believes this is because a lot of people feel as though they have lost control. However, he offers basic plans during their talk that a person may utilize to regain that sense of control.
“I think it’s important to come up with a game plan now,” says Margeotes. “You have to have a schedule. You have to stay in contact with other people. You have to exercise.”
He also urges people to “be your own leader and create a plan so you’re not just alone with your thoughts and dealing with that fear.”
