North Jersey Sandwich Shops
Featured from Bergen County:
Vinnie’s Mootz

Where: 356 Valley Brook Ave, Lyndhurst
Details: Vinnie’s Mootz is more than just mozzarella. (Though it’s absolutely the best place to purchase fresh mozzarella and burrata in North Jersey.) In any case, the authentic Italian market/restaurant is also the go-to spot in town for high-quality sandwiches. Regulars love the Lucky Lady, with chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, arugula, and balsamic glaze. But we recommend either the Drunken Chicken Parm or The Busted Knee (turkey, bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and garlic mayo). Something special to note: all bread at Vinnie’s Mootz is made with a high-protein flour that doesn’t leave patrons feeling bloated. Be sure to ask about the meaning behind each “sangweech” on the menu. There’s a story behind every sandwich, all relating to Vinnie’s family and life experiences. This includes spending his childhood summers in Italy, learning how his mother could cook something out of nothing. (All using fresh ingredients and no preservatives.) Frequent patrons can even enjoy secret menu items.

A&A Fine Foods
Where: Lincoln Park
Details: This butcher/bakery/deli/seafood spot has been delighting Morris County residents for over 30 years. Their signature gourmet sandwiches are the perfect lunchtime endeavor, featuring favorites like their famous “Godfather” hero. (Bursting with ham, prosciutto, cappicola, and fresh mozzarella.) But our go-to is the Spicy Boss, with spicy soppressata, prosciutto, cappicola, fresh mutz, and balsamic glaze. Not in the mood for a sandwich? (Wrong article, pal!) They also make a killer eggplant rollatini or vodka ravioli.
Mordi’s Sandwich Shop
Where: Jersey City
Details: Mordi’s began life as a popular food truck in 2014 before expanding to a brick-and-mortar location on Communipaw Ave. Owner and chef Mordechai Chichportiche — aka Mordi — hails from Israel and specializes in schnitzel. His selection of sandwiches includes the Breakfast Schnitzel, with crispy breaded chicken, sharp cheddar, bacon, fried egg, tomatoes, ketchup, and house garlic-lemon aioli on a brioche bun. We also recommend the Mediterranean Sub with Greek feta cheese, baby romaine, house-made hummus and parsley tahini.
Honorable Mention: Andrea Salumeria is a long-standing Jersey City staple that we’ve featured many times on this list.
Cosmo’s Italian Salumeria
Where: Hackensack
Details: This small neighborhood deli is a big part of television history. That’s because it is the heart of where many scenes from The Sopranos were filmed. Patrons also know that Cosmo’s serves up one of the best Italian subs in the state. (A bold statement, considering the embarrassment of sandwich riches New Jersey provides.) What makes Cosmo’s stand out from the pack? It’s the combination of crusty bread and the perfect ratio of meats, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar. Don’t overthink it and simply order the classic #1 on the menu.
Fiore’s House of Quality
Where: Hoboken
Details: Fiore’s House of Quality is nearly as famous as Frank Sinatra himself (known for being a frequent customer). The Hoboken institution — open since 1913 — is known for its roast beef, fresh mozzarella, and gravy hero. But everything at this classic Italian deli is amazing, so long as it includes their homemade mutz. There’s typically a line, but Fiore’s is worth the wait. Other standout sandwiches include the roasted red pepper, the corned-beef special, and the Italian tuna. For a familiar favorite, order the Italian Combo with hot peppers.
Honorable Mention: Special shoutout to Piccolo’s, a fan-favorite restaurant and the go-to spot for cheesesteaks in Hoboken.
Giovannis Italian Deli
Where: Secaucus
Details: Giovannis is known for fresh soft bread, huge portions, and to-die-for mozzarella that is made on site. This old-school Jersey-style deli consistently turns out some of the best sandwiches in the state. In fact, many customers travel from afar for favorites like their chicken parm sandwich and classic Italian sub. Just make sure to add that fresh mutz to any order! This shop is typically very busy, so it’s best to call in any sandwich orders ahead of time. Looking to impress the whole family? Place a catering order for their sandwich platters.
Mia Famiglia
Where: Millburn
Details: Though ownership has changed over the years — the deli first opened in 1997 — Mia Famiglia remains a favorite. Their fresh selection of imported cheeses, meats, olive oils, pastas, and hand-made mozzarella always brings back first-time customers. Signature sandwiches include the Classic Mozzarella (mutz with balsamic vinegar, roasted pepper, and arugula); the Jersey Italian (imported ham, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, olive oil, red vinegar, and herbs); and the Bronx “Poor Boy” (Mortadella and broccoli Rabe).
Town Hall Deli
Where: South Orange
Details: The origin of the Sloppy Joe sandwich dates back to the 1930s when the mayor of South Orange asked the Town Hall Deli owners to re-create a sandwich he discovered in Cuba. It was a combo of cole slaw, ham, cow tongue, Swiss cheese, and lots of dressing served on thin rye. The triple-decker has evolved and is now offered in many combinations, But Town Hall is its true birthplace. Besides Sloppy Joes, we recommend the Muffuletta, featuring ham, Genoa salami, provolone, and Muffuletta olive spread on fresh focaccia.
Central Jersey Sandwich Shops
Featured From Union County:
Sub-Ology

Where: 17 N Ave W, Cranford
Details: Since bursting onto the scene in 2013, Sub-Ology has consistently gone viral across social media platforms for their loaded subs. These positively packed subs come in 24 different varieties, including hits like Blazin’ Buffalo Chicken & Cheddar, Ham & American Cheese, Pepperoni & Provolone, and our personal favorite, the Loriana Ultimate Italian. This off-the-menu masterpiece is made for true Italian sub lovers, featuring premium imported meats (Prosciutto di Parma, hot and sweet Soppressata, capicola, salami, mortadella, and thin-sliced imported ham), homemade fresh mozzarella, fire-roasted red peppers, and their signature homemade aioli pesto crème all served on a baked 12-inch brick-oven Italian roll. We also recommend topping it with some peppery arugula. Their sister business, Salad-ology, specializes in gourmet salads and soups and operates out of the same location. Blurring the line between fast-casual and traditional sub shops, Sub-Ology is also popular for special event and corporate catering.

Hoagie Haven
Where: Princeton
Details: Hoagie Haven remains a fixture of the Princeton community, first opening in the 1970s. They serve the self-professed “Best Hoagies on Earth or Anywhere Else”, and most locals seems to agree. The menu is a mixture of breakfast and lunch favorites, including their signature Wake-Up Call with cheesesteak, bacon, eggs, hash brown, and Pork Roll. We also recommend the unfortunately-titled Middle Finger, featuring grilled cheese with chicken cutlet, pepperoni, and honey mustard. No longer cash only, they now accept modern payment methods.
Sapore Ravioli
Where: Middlesex
Details: For an authentic taste of gourmet Italian sandwiches, Middlesex County residents turn to Sapore Ravioli. Their signature hot and cold sandwiches are packed with high-quality, imported meats and cheeses alongside homemade ingredients. For instance, their signature Italian sub — aka The Dom — is layered with both hot and sweet capricola, hot and sweet soppressata, ham, pepperoni, imported Prosciutto, homemade roasted peppers, with oil and Balsamic vinegar. We also recommend the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak for lunch or dinner.
Yella’s
Where: Warren
Details: One of the more casual restaurants on our list, Yella’s is known for burgers, subs, shakes, and chicken sandwiches. Their menu features a number of original creations like the Torpedo Submarine Sandwich, a BestofNJ.com favorite featuring salami, fresh mozzarella, and sundried tomato pesto. Sandwich lovers with a high spice tolerance can take on the Nuclear Sub. This spicy delight features hot ham, pepper jack cheese, and hot banana peppers. Yella’s also has a location in Hawthorne (Passaic County, North Jersey)
Jersey Shore Sandwich Shops
DeMarco’s Catering & Gourmet Deli
Where: Aberdeen
Details: DeMarco’s is a combination Italian grocery store and deli, so it’s got everything to plan the perfect meal. They have an onsite butcher, a bakery, prepared and specialty foods, tons of fresh pastas, and of course, a deli. Their hot subs offer a handful of classic options like eggplant/meatball/chicken parm, sausage & peppers, and cheesesteaks. But their cold subs menu boasts a whopping 27 different sandwich options. We recommend the tried and true Number 12: grilled chicken with roasted peppers and mozzarella.
Pete’s Subs & Deli
Where: Egg Harbor Township
Details: Pete’s Subs brings the authentic old-world Italian American flavors of Ducktown, Atlantic City to Egg Harbor. So it makes sense they often draw comparison to the “golden days” of White House Subs. (Which originally made its mark for featuring massive portions of high-quality meats and cheeses at fair prices.) Each of their cold subs comes standard with lettuce, tomato, onions, hot peppers, and choice of oil or mayonnaise. This includes classics like Ham & Cheese or Turkey & Cheese, as well as their Original Italian Special.
Taliercio’s Ultimate Gourmet
Where: Red Bank
Details: This family-run Italian gourmet shop doesn’t just make deli sandwiches, they create mouthwatering works of art. These overstuffed subs, with more than 70 variations, have to be seen to be believed. Signature options include the Peter Luger, with hot roast beef, mozzarella, and Peter Luger sauce. Meanwhile, the Luca Brasi has chicken cutlet, long hot peppers, burrata, and vodka sauce. Just a quick skim of the menu has most patrons planning a trip, regardless of where they live. For fans of seeded bread, Taliercio’s has the best around.
White House Subs
Where: Atlantic City
Details: There is some debate about whether this famous sub shop has seen a decline in quality over the years. But we’re willing to stand by White House Subs as Atlantic City’s go-to sandwich spot. Fresh, high-quality meats, fair portions (in this economy), and friendly service are all part of their winning formula. After decades of operating a single location on Artic Avenue, White House Subs now has a second spot inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. All-time favorites from the menu include the Italian sub, cheesesteak, and the White House Special.
South Jersey Sandwich Shops
Carmen’s Deli
Where: Bellmawr | Haddon Heights | Marlton | Stratford
Details: Since 1966, Carmen’s has been known for its award-winning hot and cold sandwiches. But in 2017, the owner of Del Buono’s Bakery bought the deli, taking Carmen’s to the next level. They now serve over 50 top-quality lunch meats, all on Del Buono’s mega-popular rolls and white bread. The original Belmawr location has since been renovated and three more spots have opened, merging Carmen’s and Del Buono together. (All part of an aggressive expansion.) The hoagies are great, but the cheesesteaks are their signature sandwich.
Chick’s Deli
Where: Cherry Hill
Details: Chick’s is Cherry Hill’s go-to spot for club sandwiches, chicken steaks, and all-day breakfast sandwiches. From the Jersey classic Pork Roll, Egg, & Cheese to chicken salad or tuna & cheese, they have it all. But their specialty sandwiches are where they really shine. In particular, the chicken cheese steak with broccoli rabe & sharp provolone is a must-try. The more traditional mushroom cheese steak is also a winner. Chick’s is on the verge of celebrating 70 years in business, after first opening all the way back in 1957.
Dad’s Deli & Catering
Where: Marlton
Details: Even through a change in ownership, Dad’s continues to set a high standard. This no-frills deli offers all the hoagie classics, plus a variety of Dad’s originals. The Ginzo, for instance, is a fan favorite. It perfectly balances prosciutto, Genoa salami, sharp provolone, roasted red peppers, and spicy red relish. Another hit is the Gerty, made with corned beef, pastrami, Swiss, and Thousand Island dressing, available either hot or cold. Sandwiches here come in three sizes: 8″ (mini), 12″ (standard), and the gut-busting 24″ (yes, that’s two feet).
Donkey’s Place
Where: Camden
Details: There was simply no way to get through this list without showcasing at least one dedicated cheesesteak restaurant. And there’s no better cheesesteak spot in the entire state than Donkey’s Place. (Even the great Anthony Bourdain loved this spot.) Their famous cheesesteaks are served on their signature poppy seed buns and are customizable to match any preference. This includes adding extra meat, cheese, or onions and pairing with choice of regular French fries or cheese fries. We prefer extra cheese and spicy pickles with ours.
