Outdoor Dining Restaurants

Parker’s Garage & Oyster Saloon

Where: 116 Northwest Ave, Beach Haven
Details: Parker’s Garage is a throwback to a time they consider to be Beach Haven’s “Golden Era,” the early 1900s. This is when original owner Ellis Parker first opened a combination houseboat rental/restaurant and eventual boat engine repair shop. Today, Parker’s Garage invites families to dock in the nearby public boat slip and enjoy views of Parker Island. Their menu is brimming with seafood. For instance, the Saloon side of their menu offers oysters or clams on the half shell, shrimp, and lobster. Meanwhile, their signature Garage Classics include Parker’s Crab Cakes, Boathouse Bouillabaisse, and Scallops & “Bacon” (pork belly). The latter option combines scallops with pork belly, corn, and tomato. We also recommend ordering a side of Jersey Street Corn, no matter the entree. Parker’s Garage offers outdoor dining on their deck overlooking Barnegat Bay, with reservations recommended. Fun fact: The restaurant invests in an oyster co-op to help improve the nearby water quality.

Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant

Where: 100 Ocean Ave North, Long Branch
Details: Just steps from the beach, Rooney’s offers a picturesque view of the Atlantic Ocean. A large bi-level outdoor deck with custom décor offers a sense of closeness to the sea. Since the lower level is covered by the upper deck, it’s great for lunch or dinner any time of day. Rooney’s even serves a seasonal Sunday brunch buffet. Meanwhile, the innovative dishes from Executive Chef Jared Brown focus on coastal cuisine that enhances seafood staples. For instance, the Angry Lobster dinner is pan roasted in the original shell and served over a bed of linguini. They further accent the dish with olive oil, garlic, hot pepper flakes, and basil. Lobster lovers can also order the Lobster Mac-A-Rooney with lobster meat, Parmesan, and Mozzarella. However, their signature Fish Board steals the show, allowing patrons to build their own entree. Customers pick a fish, a preparation method, a sauce, and two sides to create their ideal dinner. Just don’t forget to try their homemade Key Lime Pie before calling it a night.

Mud City Crab House

Where: 1185 E Bay Ave, Manahawkin
Details: Mud City Crab House has been in business for over 25 years. The seafood on the menu here is as fresh as it gets. That’s because the business also doubles as a fish market. This means the fresh fish they sell in the market is also the same fish in their dinner dishes. Their signature Jumbo Lump Crab Cake is a must-try, but their other house specialty is the Cioppino. This fish stew includes shrimp, clams, crab, mussels, and fish in a spicy red sauce over linguine. Their Steak & Cake is a fun twist on the classic Surf & Turf entree. The version here combines 8oz filet Mignon with jumbo lump crab cake or 3oz lobster tail. Outdoor dining takes place on their patio and is a great spot to enjoy a seasonal craft cocktail, wine, or beer from their full bar. (We suggest the Strawberry Basil Lemonade.) Mud City gets busy during the spring and summer months and does not take reservations. But they do have outdoor fire pits and a Barstream (an airstream trailer modified for drink service) to make it worth the wait.

Boatyard401
Where: Point Pleasant Beach
Details: Boatyard 401 boasts a huge outdoor dining deck overlooking the marinas and boatyards of Manasquan river. That’s in addition to two floors of open-air indoor dining with panoramic views of Point Pleasant Beach. So basically, there’s no bad seat in the house. The menu is a mix of burgers, seafood, pizza, and cocktails, and also features popular build-your-own Poke Bowls. We recommend starting with the fried clam strips, then ordering the Deck Hand Po’ Boy with fried shrimp. For dessert, we’re all-in on the homemade key lime pie.
The Gables
Where: Beach Haven
Details: The Gables is known for its historic Inn, luscious gardens, and Victorian-era antiques which adorn every room. It feels like a step back in time, with all the comforts of modern luxury. Much of the same can be said for the on-site restaurant, blending modern cooking techniques with classic cuisine. Since the menu changes daily, we recommend simply trusting Chef Richard Diemer’s Prix Fixe menu for the best experience. The Gables is open nightly for dinner service all summer long, and on weekends throughout the spring and fall.
Harpoons on the Bay
Where: North Cape May
Details: Harpoons on the Bay is the perfect warm weather destination for dinner or drinks in North Cape May. The food menu features seafood and American favorites, while the drink menu offers craft beer, fine wines, and spirits. Their spacious outdoor dining deck overlooks the Delaware Bay and is the perfect spot to enjoy a Vienna beef Chicago-style hot dog. We recommend the Chili Cheese Dog, topped with the restaurant’s homemade chili and bier cheese. For mocktail fans, Harpoons provides Zero Proof choices like the Seedlip Mockarita.
Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille
Where: Cape May
Details: Harry’s is home to Cape May’s only oceanfront rooftop bar. It’s one of the Shore’s best summertime hangouts, boasting signature sandwiches, fresh local seafood, and their popular orange crush cocktails. Their classic Orange Crush features Absolut mandrin vodka, triple sec, fresh orange juice, and Sprite. But they also offer fan-favorite alternate crush flavors like Creamsicle, Key Lime, and Peach. For sandwich lovers, we recommend the French Dip with truffle fries. Don’t miss their Bubbly Brunch every Saturday and Sunday.
Marina Grille
Where: Belmar
Details: Don’t let the name scare you, dining on the Shark River waterfront is a perfectly blissful experience. The laid back atmosphere pairs perfectly with Marina Grille’s selection of fresh seafood, brick-oven pizza, and craft cocktails. For a special dinner date, starting with the Seafood Tower is always a winner. Otherwise, we recommend starting with the shellfish combo or citrus calamari, then going for the Stuffed Shrimp + Sea Scallops entree. Pair it with a Strawberry Ember cocktail and Crème Brûlée Cheesecake for an amazing evening.
The Proving Ground
Where: Highlands
Details: Combining a waterfront patio, craft cocktail bar, and creative menu, The Proving Ground offers the ultimate outdoor dining experience. Overlooking Sandy Hook, the restaurant boasts a spacious waterfront patio and outdoor tiki bar. While the menu is always evolving to push the boundaries of New American cuisine, typical mainstays include the Lobster Bisque Soup, Blackened Chicken Sandwich, and PG Homemade Meatloaf. Don’t miss Seafood Fridays, offering specials like Drunken Mussels and Mustard Salmon.
R Bar
Where: Asbury Park
Details: The friendly neighborhood vibes at R Bar make everyone feel like family. (Almost as if it was “Our Bar,” get it?) R Bar has two distinct outdoor dining options, offering both a backyard patio and rooftop bar with a greenhouse. The menu is brimming with standout seafood choices like Crawfish Street Tacos, Blackened Faroe Island Salmon, and Shrimp Po’ Boys. They also curate a delicious mix of cocktails and mocktails. We recommend the Divine Intervention mocktail (Tonic Water with Garden Seedlip & Cardamom Grapefruit Cordial).
