Lula in Ridgewood Elevates Locally-Sourced American Cuisine

Lula Restaurant Interior

The meaning behind the name of Lula in Ridgewood is simple: It’s the nickname for the owner’s daughter. Chef and Owner Conor Browne grew up in town, and still has family and friends living in Ridgewood. Now, he gets to serve them and his community New American cuisine with a focus on Mediterranean flavors.

“I always wanted to open a restaurant but never thought it would be in Ridgewood,” Conor admits. But when the space became available, he knew it would be an ideal fit. Lulais a BYOB spot that features clean lines with minimalistic decor. “It has a cozy, sophisticated West Village vibe,” Conor says. The eatery seats 54 inside and an additional 18 guests on the sidewalk.

Scratch-Made, Seasonally-Driven

The New American menu at Lula changes frequently since the spot sources local ingredients and serves seasonal cuisine. Everything is made from scratch in-house by their kitchen staff of three. “I don’t want to be like everyone else in town,” Conor explains. “We’ve found a niche for ourselves. Our food is elevated, and we focus time and energy on guests’ service experience.”

In particular, their focaccia is a hit; partly because the preparation for it changes seasonally. In the spring, for example, they serve it with whipped herb butter and sea salt. Likewise, guests love the whipped burrata, seasonally made with strawberry agrodolce, Marcona almond, spring lettuce, and vincotto. Meanwhile, their crudo depends on what fish they get from their fishmonger. To date, they’ve served cod, swordfish, halibut, and monkfish, each paired with seasonal items.

Grilled Octopus

“We try to keep things light,” Conor says. “I hate heavy items. I want foods that are light and tasty to the palette, and I don’t want you to leave stuffed. You should feel comfortable when you leave.”

For dessert, the classic lemon tart is their biggest seller and Conor’s favorite. “It’s not too tart and not too sweet. It smells like a campfire,” he says. They also make a simple chocolate mousse, and a Dutch baby pancake served with whipped cream and seasonal berries.
