The Japanese word “jugemu” translates to “limitless life” in English. For the owners behind Jugemu in Cresskill, this means offering guests limitless possibilities for sushi and authentic Japanese dishes. To ensure freshness, the restaurant even has fish delivered daily directly from the famed Tsujiki market in Japan.
The 650-square-foot Jugemu has an “airy, modern, and approachable Zen vibe,” says owner Masahiko Fukano. It currently seats 45 guests inside, and they are also planning to offer outdoor seating in the near future. Beyond traditional dining, the restaurant is available for private parties and special events. They also host a variety of family-friendly events open to the public throughout the year.

Authentic Japanese Dining
Jugemu strives to offer an authentic Japanese menu that delivers “a taste of Tokyo,” Fukano says. One popular option at the moment is their signature Counter Omakase Experience, which is an 8-course dinner. The progression of courses goes from appetizer, sashimi, grilled item, tempura, Chawanmushi (egg custard), 10 piece sushi, soup, to dessert. Other fan favorite menu items include refined side dishes such as goma-ae and eggplant agebitashi (deep fried eggplant).
“We do not cut corners with preparation,” Fukano says. In particular, their Prix Fixe Sushi Dinner includes five courses, including one sushi roll hand selected by the chef. “You get to try a little bit of everything and be satisfied with a full stomach at the end of the meal,” Fukano explains. Meanwhile, more adventurous eaters are encouraged to try the Daily 5, a rotating selection of sushi the chef picks. “It’s fun because it allows you to try different sushi and be delighted by the selection of fish,” Fukano says. As for drink options, Jugemu serves sake, craft beer, and a selection of curated wines.
About the Owners
The team behind Jugemu started out in the food truck business, serving casual yet authentic Japanese food. “We are just two ordinary people who enjoy good-tasting food; and appreciate the care that’s been taken to prepare them,” Fukano says. They want Jugemu to represent “a quality Japanese restaurant that can be a date night/special occasion spot.”
