The Black Horse Pub in Mendham is the oldest continuously-running restaurant in the state. Open since 1742, the nearly 300-year-old eatery recently got a facelift. The upgrade includes a complete remodeling of the dining room, kitchen, and bar, and also adds outdoor dining. Even the menu has been revamped.
Fans of the restaurant’s 1700s vibe need not worry, however. The makeover aimed to preserve the spot’s history. “The interior décor stays true to its roots, preserving much of the charm that our guests have always loved,” says Kevin Felice, VP of 40North Restaurant Group.

New Yet Familiar Furnishings
The new dining room layout of Black Horse Pub will feel similar to longtime patrons. Booths line the walls, a fireplace creates a focal point, and tables are in the center of the room. But the back room has been modernized to feel more inviting and contemporary. “We added thoughtful, modern touches to freshen the feel while keeping a sense of familiarity and warmth. From the design of the space to the flavors on the plate, everything has been curated to honor the legacy of the restaurant while offering something fresh and inviting,” Kevin says. “We hope our guests leave feeling like they’ve revisited an old friend, but with exciting new stories to share.”
The new kitchen is double the size of the old one. In fact, the space has been overhauled from floor to ceiling, equipped with state-of-the-art appliances. “It’s a fresh start for our culinary operations team, and we’re excited for guests to taste the results,” Kevin says.

But that’s not all. The Black Horse Pub is also hard at work on what’s next. This includes upgrading the building’s exterior to accommodate outdoor dining during warmer weather. After completing the Pub side remodel, work on improving the Tavern side will begin. “A lot of exciting things are to come for the property, “ Kevin explains. “We can’t wait to share it all with our guests as it unfolds.”
A Menu of American Pub Favorites
The revamped menu at Black Horse Pub keeps popular favorites while introducing new, refined versions of American pub classics. “The new menu is a mix of old and new—something for everyone to enjoy,” Kevin explains. “It’s the perfect balance of familiar comfort and bold new flavors.”
Returning classics include wings, pot pie, and crab cakes. Meanwhile, new dishes include bronzini, dry-aged steak, and roasted chicken. Kevin loves the new Secret Burger—a proprietary blend patty with melted cheddar cheese on a sesame seed Challah bun. “It might sound simple, but this burger will make your taste buds explode,” he promises.
