De Novo European Pub Comes to Edgewater

De Novo means “beginning again” in Latin. It’s a name that suits the new Edgewater restaurant well, as this is the popular eatery’s second location. Reminiscent of the family-oriented casual pubs of Europe, De Novo features a reclaimed wood and brass detailed façade.

In the grand lobby, you’ll find photos of the George Washington Bridge overlooking New York and New Jersey. (In fact, these photos – taken by a drone – make you feel like you’re standing in the middle of the bridge.) As you move through the entryway, you’ll notice an overhead pergola lined with greenery and floating glass lights; as well as 15,000 repurposed wine corks.

De Novo Double Vision

“I worked to create a space that would have a sophisticated yet welcoming and warm vibe with a casual feel,” says owner Demetri Malki, who also owns the restaurant’s Montclair location. As for what separates the two spots, “One thing that Edgewater offers which Montclair can’t is the views!”

The 4,000-square foot space seats 230 people, with a large, lit tree in the center of the dining room. Meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling windows in the sunroom offer panoramic views of both the George Washington Bridge and boats sailing on the Hudson River. They also have a room for private dining which holds 60 to 70 people.

De Novo Bar Area

In addition, the 2,000-square foot outdoor bar has 16 seats and a patio area for up to 120 people.

“What I enjoy most about what I do is bringing people together and sharing an experience,” says Malki. “I built a special sense of community in Montclair where many patrons have now become close friends. I’m striving every day to create the same in Edgewater.”

New Beginning. New Menu

De Novo offers a Mediterranean-style Italian and French menu; this includes house-made breads, small plates, flatbreads, salads, burgers, house-made pastas, entrées, and late-night bar bites. The menu mixes pub grub with sophisticated European fare, from the mind of Executive Chef Adolfo Marisi.

For example, starters include tuna tartare with a crispy rice cake, spicy wasabi mousse, and soy syrup. Then, as an entree, Malki says to try the Chilean sea bass. He also suggests the homemade squid ink spaghetti with lobster bits, tear-drop tomatoes, sherry wine and shallot cream sauce. Finally, don’t forget to try their dessert before you leave; one stand-out choice is the homemade warm brownie with salted caramel gelato.
