ButterFish Brings Michelin Star-Quality Sushi to Rutherford

North Jersey residents have high expectations when it comes to sushi. Luckily, the team behind ButterFish in Rutherford is ready for the challenge. A Two-Michelin-Star chef curates the menu, ensuring guests experience sushi that melts in their mouth like butter.

ButterFish occupies a 1,000-square foot space and features orange booths and custom-made chairs. Custom wall art and a black marble wall further accentuate the interior. According to the team, “ButterFish offers a refined, minimalist ambiance and innovative flavors crafted to impress”. General Manager JoJo Sammut says the spot aims to set the bar higher each day and is evolving daily.

An Unforgettable Sushi Menu

ButterFish strives to serve “the freshest sushi you can get in New Jersey”. In fact, the kitchen features minimal storage and instead focuses on preparing fresh fish that arrives. The restaurant sources fish from all over the world, from Japan to Boston.

The menu offers a la carte or omakase-style options (the latter allows the chef to prepare his preferred meal.) Popular a la carte menu items include salmon burrata. This comes with salmon, fresh burrata cheese, yuzu olive oil, honey truffle, and sea salt. Another favorite is the Secret Menu Grab Roll Flight. Another favorite is the toro grab handroll, with shoyu, kizami wasabi, and scallion. The ButterFish team also recommends the scallop nigiri with yuzu and salt.

Signature Omakase Experience

At ButterFish, Omakase packages include five or six courses. The popular premium omakase option includes the most options of sushi available. For the current menu, guests receive three appetizers (edamame, sashimi, and salmon burrata), 12 sushi, and two handrolls. The sushi includes two tuna, two albacore, two toro, one seared toro, one yellowtail, one salmon truffle, one uni, one scallop, one uniagi foie gras, and one A5 wagyu. Finally, the two handrolls are blue crab and toro.

ButterFish is BYOB, with mocktails available for purchase. One early favorite is the Japanese Cherry Blossom, a lychee-forward mocktail with a sour-cherry undertone.

About the Restaurant

Sherif is a local businessman with 10 years of restaurant experience. His partner at ButterFish is Chef Jeffry Undiarto, formerly of Hollywood’s two-Michelin star spot n/naka in Los Angeles. Chef Jeffry is currently of Iki Nori Sushi in West Hollywood. Sherif brought his restaurant to Rutherford to diversify the town’s cuisine.
