The Old Canal Inn

Where: 2 E Passaic Ave, Nutley
Details: The Old Canal Inn is one of the oldest bars in the area, dating back to 1934. They deep fry their fresh Jumbo wings until they are cooked to perfection and have a nice crunch. Wings come with a choice of 11 different sauces, with two in particular being favorites among long-time customers. The first is their garlic buffalo sauce, and the second is an Old Canal Inn original creation, Thermo Nuclear. To make this special sauce, Co-owner Mark Conca uses fresh long hots and Habanero peppers as the base. Patrons can order single portions of wings or go for the 25-wing platter. (The platter comes with up to three sauces.) Of course, everyone knows wings go best with beer, and Old Canal Inn has plenty of options to choose from. They have over 100 craft beers available, including favorites such as Allagash, Chimay, and Samuel Smith. Likewise, their popular sour options include Bronx City Island and Neshaminy Creek. After enjoying a platter of wings, head to the shuffleboard room for darts and other fun.

Krug’s Tavern
Where: Newark
Details: Krug’s Tavern is a longstanding pillar of the Newark community. Patrons rave about their traditional and boneless wings thanks in part to their best-selling sauce, the Employee Secret Sauce. This not-so-secret, secret sauce is a perfect blend of their homemade buffalo and scampi sauces mixed together. In fact, all four of the sauces at Krug’s Tavern are homemade, including the Buffalo and BBQ options. Besides wings, the tavern has a dozen beers on tap featuring a mix of favorites as well as local options.
The Front Porch Pub
Where: Hawthorne
Details: The Front Porch Pub mixes New American cuisine with Asian-inspired dishes. What does that mean for their wings? It means patrons get the best of both cultures, with sauces like Garlic Soy, Bourbon BBQ, and Kobra Thai. They also do dry rubs like Old Bay, Cajun, and Lemon Pepper. Chef Melissa Mak gives customers a choice between naked, fried, and double fried wings. Our recommendation is the classic single fried wings with garlic soy sauce. But we also have a soft spot for their unique Maple Bacon Jalapeno sauce.
Jimmy Geez Sports Bar & Grill
Where: Haledon | Oak Ridge
Details: Jimmy Geez was either going to wind up in our list of NJ’s Best Sports Bars, or here. Obviously, for this year we chose the latter. Their colossal wings and selection of sauces keeps patrons coming back all NFL season long, and beyond. Favorites from the wet sauce menu include Garlic Teriyaki, Mango Habanero, Nashville Hot, and Parmesan Peppercorn. They also have some standout dry rubs, including Caribbean Jerk, Everything Seasoning, and Jimmy’s Secret Rub. Some wings are even topped with garlic powder and Parmesan.
Knotty Pine Pub
Where: Wharton
Details: This local favorite flies under the radar, especially when it comes to their wings. But patrons swear by them, especially in flavors like Honey Garlic, Bloody Mary, and Thai Chili. However, longtime fans know the real stars of the menu are their signature KPP Style and Motor Oil sauces. The former packs a lot of heat, while the latter is a mix of sweet and heat. Owners Jim and Leslie Hill are known in town for their wonderful and welcoming demeanor; not to mention maintaining a staff of some of the area’s best bartenders.
Marley’s Gotham Grill
Where: Hackettstown
Details: Marley’s Gotham Grill is the place to go for even the pickiest of wing eaters. Guests can select between bone-in, bone-out, gluten-free, or tofu wings, as well as a whopping 400+ sauces. (They even do Falafel wings.) That’s a bigger combo of spices, cheeses, and mix-ins than any other menu in the state. From the adventurous Raspberry Chimichurri to the classic BBQ, Marley’s has a flavor for every wing fan. Plus, they regularly add new sauces to the list, so there’s always something new to try. Don’t ask us to choose a favorite!
Sharky’s
Where: Clifton | Boonton
Details: Sharky’s is a casual bar and restaurant known for their chicken wings, tenders, and shrimp. Both North Jersey locations boast a massive sauce list, featuring over 30 options. Flavors range from “hell” to mild lemon pepper butter sauce, so there is truly a sauce for every taste. Wings come in orders of 10, 16, 25, 50, or even 100, meaning Sharky’s can easily serve any party size. Of course, their fan-favorite wings and tenders also make them an attractive sports bar destination during the NFL season.
The Straphanger Saloon
Where: Hackensack
Details: The Straphanger has about as much social media presence as the original Wild West saloons of the 1600s. Their concise menu of crowd-pleasing bar favorites includes options like pizza, chili cheese fries, and pepper-jack stix. But locals know the gem of the menu is their wings, classically served with celery and blue cheese. The Straphanger offers just five sauces, mastering the art of Buffalo, BBQ, Sweet Chili, Spicy Garlic, and Jerk. Fans of lightly-breaded wings will particularly love this spot.
The Rock
Where: Clifton
Details: Choice is king at The Rock, which boasts over 30 wet and dry sauce flavors for their wings. Besides the classics, their unique wet sauce options range from Peanut Butter & Jelly and Citrus Chipotle to Bourbon Molasses. As for their dry rubs, we recommend either the Bacon Ranch, Salt & Vinegar, or 7 Pepper Facelift. The Rock also lets patrons mix two sauces together to create their own signature flavor. Besides bone-in and boneless wings, they also serve breaded wings (either plain or hot & spicy).
Central Jersey
1911 Smokehouse Barbeque
Where: Trenton
Details: Fans of smoked wings have a home at 1911 Smokehouse Barbeque. This popular spot has a robust BBQ menu full of smoked meats and appetizers. Their wings are available in traditional or boneless options, and choice of grilled or fried. 1911 has over 15 sauces and seasonings, including favorites like Lemon Pepper, Harlem Shake, Sriracha Bourbon, Jamaican Jerk, and Atomic. Vegan wings are also available, all in orders of small, large, or 50 wings at a time. We recommend a side of candied yams with any wing order.
The Extra Pint
Where: Manville
Details: This popular game day spot is known for their Bang Bang Shrimp, beers on tap, and signature wings. This includes their fan-favorite Bucket of Wings, an order of 21 classic wings with bleu cheese and celery. Available wing sauces include Garlic Buffalo, Sesame Hot, BBQ, Mango Habanero, and BoomBoom. Likewise, The Extra Pint offers dry rubs including Lemon Pepper, Old Bay, Cajun, and Jamaican Jerk. Vegetarian boneless wings, buffalo tenders, and grilled chicken strips are available alternatives for traditional wings.
River Road Tavern
Where: Piscataway
Details: Outside of a Facebook page, River Road Tavern doesn’t have much of an online presence. Which means all the talk about their menu is genuine word-of-mouth. Locals and first-time customers alike are always blown away by their wings. These classic fried wings come in a variety of sauce options, including their popular Buffalo and signature Fat Cat sauce. (We also recommend the Garlic Parm wings.) The wings are so good here, River Road Tavern is a popular take home and catering option during Superbowl parties.
SFC – Seoul Fried Chicken
Where: Edison | Somerset
Details: Seoul Fried Chicken, or SFC to regulars, specializes in fast-casual Korean chicken. Founder/Chef Hansong Kim uses an authentic, Korean-style double-frying technique to make his wings, tenders, and chicken sandwiches. Everything is made in-house daily, from the top-secret chicken batter recipe to the sauces; including the fan favorite honey garlic, sweet and spicy, soy garlic, devil hot, and wasabi pepper options. Plus, the chicken is never frozen, certified halal, non-GMO, and without hormones or antibiotics.
The Station Bar & Grill
Where: Garwood
Details: The Station is a go-to spot for “famous Brian’s Brothers” wings and craft beer. They sell their jumbo, crispy wings in 10, 20, and 50-piece options. Available sauces include mild, medium, and serious, as well as teriyaki and shotgun dry rub. But we recommend the Honey BBQ, which pairs great with bleu cheese. There’s no shortage of drink options to wash down their wings with, as The Station has a large tap list. Patrons can pick between a selection of IPAs, lagers, ciders, stouts, brown ales, pilsners, and hard seltzers.
Jersey Shore
Jack’s Goal Line Stand
Where: Long Branch
Details: This All-American Sports Restaurant is known far and wide for their craft beers and chicken wings. Part of the draw is in their preparation, as Jack’s offers more than just classic buffalo and boneless wings. Their menu also includes oven roasted (never fried) wings, which they slow roast then finish on the grill. Their signature Goal Line Wings are marinated overnight in Frank’s Red Hot sauce, then flash fried and oven baked. For their traditional wings, they offer sauces such as Teriyaki, Honey Mustard, Garlic, and Honey BBQ.
The Chicken or the Egg
Where: Beach Haven | Marlton
Details: The CHEGG on Long Beach Island is renowned for its wings. They hand-toss their menu of bone-in wings, veggie wings, tenders, and buffalo shrimp in 18 unique, homemade sauces. The selection ranges from traditional flavors like garlic parm and “MediYUMMM,” to more daring options like the infamous “Ludicrous” sauce. For those looking for something different, the “Santos” (spicy BBQ) and “Beesting” (honey sweet & spicy) are crowd favorites. In addition, the restaurant blends traditional cooking techniques with modern flavors to create a unique taste. Practicing the art of less is more, Dolsot House offers just four sauces to choose from. Their available flavors are Honey Sesame — which is their most popular option –, Soy Garlic, Spicy, and Diablo. They offer wings in 4-, 10-, and 20-piece options.
