The Barrow House is bringing a new kind of “night out” to North Jersey. Standing out amongst the droves of delicious Italian spots, warm Irish pubs and eclectic New-American selections, the newly opened rustic restaurant and bar takes guests back in time with its colonial-inspired décor before pulling them back into the present with a menu that is as unique as it is classic.
Food and Drinks at the Barrow House
The dishes served up range from The Barrow burger – which features American cheese made in-house – to the flavorful grilled octopus salad, which is featured in the share plate section of the menu. The restaurant’s owners, brothers Dean and Thomas Maroulakos, who also have Nutley’s own Cowan’s Public bar to their name, describe the menu as American farm fare and source their seasonal ingredients locally. Their “seasonal menu of rustic dishes” features plenty of unique options, but their recommendation is the short rib ravioli and, like their American cheese, anything Chef Frank DeGruttalo can make in-house is made in-house, right down to the pasta and butter.
In addition to the restaurant, The Barrow House also features a 2,000 sq. ft. bar area with décor inspired by the historical Morris Canal. Patrons can choose from a fully-stocked bar with 18 craft beers on tap – including a High Point Brewery collaboration called the Barrow House Harvest lager – an 84-bottle wine list and two cocktails on draft. These signature drinks are made fresh daily and come right out of the tap for the perfect pour each time.

The Barrow House celebrated its grand opening on October 26, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the works for the near future. Located at 1296 Van Houten Avenue in Clifton, the bar is open from 3:00 pm to 3:00 am every day. A light menu is offered until 5:00 pm, after which time the full dinner menu is served. Dinner runs until 10:00 pm Sunday through Wednesday, then the bar menu kicks back in until midnight; Thursday through Saturday, dinner runs until 11:00 pm with the bar menu available until 1:00 am on those nights.
