First made popular in the 1980s, Laser Tag is not only still around, but more technologically advanced than ever. At Tac Ops – a tactical laser tag experience in Fairfield – the team is bringing laser tag into the 21st century. This means better gear, more realistic scenarios, and a greater variety of game modes and objectives.
In particular, games at Tac Ops involve realistic situations, combat simulations, and roleplay style games. “Our games are more tactical in nature, so they are objective based,” says Armando DiRienzo, partner. These include basic Deathmatch games, a standard mode where the objective is to eliminate the other team. But they also have Capture the Flag, Domination, VIP, and other games familiar to video game players. “They’re great for team building because the idea is to work together to complete the objectives,” Armando says. “It’s also a pretty good workout.”

A Fun Activity For All
Tac Ops can serve as either a fun family activity or an advanced training simulation. In fact, thanks to its realistic approach to combat, many law enforcement officials use tactical laser tag for training purposes. Their immersive arenas and revolutionary equipment also allow players to feel like they’re inside their favorite video games. “It has been popular for a long time,” Armando says. “I think it has a lot to do with the competition of it all. It used to be about just running around and shooting at the other team. Now, it’s about the stats.”

Thanks to adjustable difficulty levels, Tac Ops is suitable for anyone ages eight and up. “Since we are relatively new and our game style is new, almost everyone that comes in is a beginner,” says Armando. All of their equipment is state of the art, so players are always using top-of-the-line tools. “Our venue was designed for adults with kids in mind,” Armando explains. As a fully immersive experience, Tac Ops intricately plots all combat simulations and roleplay scenarios. “We have gone to great lengths to make the games immersive,” Armando says. “We want people to lose themselves in the game; and forget the outside world for the hour that they are in our arena.”
How Tac Ops Works
All laser tag games are played indoors at Tac Ops. They start by adjusting the difficulty level based on the group’s experience. A 75-minute session consists of 15 minutes of suiting up and a briefing on the rules and different games. For instance, they use the CallSign app to track scoring and stats. The app breaks down specific stats for each game and also displays the winner. After the briefing, groups play for a full hour, and can enjoy multiple games within the session. In addition, Tac Ops televises all games in their lobby and party rooms.
