Summer is the perfect time to switch up your hairstyle. Whether you’re partial to ponytails or prefer long, loose waves, there’s no better season to experiment with your look. “During summer, people go out more,” says Meghan Rafferty, manager at Salon CARU in Hoboken, speaking about this year’s hair trends. “They go to the beach. They go on vacations. With all of that happening, people want something new. They want to brighten their look.”
Regardless of your preference, Rafferty says summer is the perfect opportunity to try something new, whether it’s a fresh color, cut or hairstyle. The sky is the limit when it comes to this season’s hottest trends. Here, Rafferty shares a few of her favorites.

Sun-kissed streaks: “Hair painting seems to be something that everyone loves. We just take a brush with color, then put bleach on every section using our fingers to smooth the bleach onto pieces of the hair. Or we use something we have in our salon called a color press. The advantage over foils is that it’s a little better for your hair, and it’s a more customized look. Your hair also blends better so it looks more flawless.”
Traditional highlights: “Traditional foils are also making a big comeback. Everybody keeps saying, ‘Make me brighter’ from the root down. We didn’t see that last summer because last year everyone was all about the ombres.”
Playful colors: “I’ve had three girls come in recently asking for coral hair. It’s a really pretty color. Rose gold also started becoming a hot trend in jewelry about a year ago. Then the iPhone 6S had an option in rose gold which everyone went crazy for. We started seeing it trickle into the salon when our owner, an international artist for Paul Mitchell, did a rose gold color onstage. We posted it to our Instagram and Yelp and, all of a sudden, clients started requesting it. We’ve also had four violet ombres in the past month!”

The Lob: “The lob is huge right now. It’s a little longer in the front and a little shorter in the back ,so it’s longer than a traditional bob. I think it’s a really great look for summer. Lobs are beautiful for all face shapes because they don’t hug around the face like a regular bob. They’re also a great stepping stone to see what your hair would look like shorter without cutting it completely off.”
Braids: “We’re seeing a lot of different braids. There’s messy, fun looks with braids attached. There’s also everything from the Lauren Conrad look to full-on French braids. Everyone is just loving braids right now.”

Keratin Treatments: “Keratins are huge for summer. They make your hair easy to blow out. Plus, it won’t frizz in the humidity. You can’t walk out and have your hair air dry perfectly, but it cuts your styling time in half. The treatment lasts up to three months if you take care of it properly with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.”
