La Festa di San Valentino
February 14 – February 16
The ancient Romans are said to be responsible for the name of our modern Day of love.
Emperor Claudius II executed 2 men – both named Valentine – on February 14 of different years in the third century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.
As the years went on the holiday grew sweeter as Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work.
It gained popularity in Europe and by the 14th century made its way to the New World.
Today the holiday is big business and is celebrated with gifts of cards, candy,
jewelry, proposals of marriage and romantic dinners.
