Art has no boundaries. Much like how generations of works can dazzle audiences without being confined to any strict limits or regulations so, too, do artists themselves come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and ages. The beauty of art is that anyone can create something they are passionate about. There is, perhaps, no better example of how art transcends boundaries than 96-year-old artist, Sister Gerardine Mueller.

On this episode of Life & Living with Joanna Gagis, Sister Gerardine Mueller, O.P., artist and former professor at Caldwell University, offers viewers insight into her extensive career as an artist and how, at 96 years old, she is still creating one-of-a-kind pieces.

Sister Mueller, who followed in her artist mother’s footsteps, has had an affinity for art since she was a little girl. By the time she was in high school, she had made her decision to join the seminary, and her faith and beliefs have also played a role in her stunning works of art. In college, she began studying science and history until she was maneuvered into the field of art by a professor who was impressed by the young Mueller’s talent.

She began teaching in the art program at then-Caldwell College in 1960. As a talented artist herself, Sister Mueller was fully submerged in the field of art and was able to teach and connect with her students on a deeper level. Her practice of painting and drawing never withered, and to this day, Sister Mueller still creates spectacular works of art, including her popular Christmas cards which all incorporate important messages.

“A little more than 20 years ago, I began making my Christmas cards,” said Sister Mueller. She fashioned them in the model of postcards, because “it could be passed around, delivered, and people would see it and get the Christmas message.”

Sister Mueller has a comprehensive, breathtaking portfolio from her decades of work. To learn more about her career and what she creates regularly, check out this edition of Life & Living with Joanna Gagis.
