Think about New Jersey’s most beautiful spots and Camden probably doesn’t immediately come to mind. But you’d be foolish to overlook this hidden gem. The Camden Waterfront lies directly across from Philadelphia and features a wide range of activities and attractions to keep the whole family entertained. If you’re looking for a fun day trip this summer, check out our list of the 8 Best Reasons to Visit the Camden Waterfront so you don’t miss a thing!

8. Adventure Aquarium

Camden Waterfront

Possibly the most well-known attraction on the waterfront, Adventure Aquarium is home to all the sea creatures you’ll ever want to see: fish, reptiles, sharks, starfish, octupi, hippos and more. The aquarium always has new attractions or exhibits, so you’re likely to see something new each time you visit. New this year are a Shark Bridge that lets you walk directly over the sharks, an exhibit of Little Blue Penguins and the Sea Turtle Cove.

7. Camden Children’s Garden

Camden Waterfront

A four-acre garden to explore, plus rides, a splash pad and a butterfly house make the Camden Children’s Garden a great outing for the family. There are always special events happening, so make sure to check the schedule. Mark your calendar for this summer’s Peach, Princess & Pirate Celebration on August 13 and 14. Kids are invited to come dressed as a pirate or a princess for a celebration of one of New Jersey’s sweetest summer fruits–the peach!

6. Live Concerts

Camden Waterfront

With seating for 25,000, the BB&T Pavilion is the perfect place to see the hottest musical acts, Broadway shows and family entertainment. This summer, relax under the stars to the sounds of Luke Bryan, Josh Groban, Snoop Dogg, Counting Crows and Jimmy Buffett, along with many other acts. Concerts are held indoors during the fall and winter months. Visit their website to see the full listing of upcoming shows.

5. Battleship New Jersey

Camden Waterfront

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in some of New Jersey’s military history, head to the Battleship New Jersey, the country’s largest and most decorated battleship. Take a guided tour and learn what life was like for sailors who lived aboard the ship years ago. Self-guided tours are also available daily. Special events, such as overnight visits and the WMGK Brew Blast (scheduled for September 10), are planned throughout the year.

4. The Walt Whitman House

Camden Waterfront

Purchased for $1750 in 1884, this modest frame house located on Mickle Boulevard is the only home ever owned by famous poet Walt Whitman. The Walt Whitman House hosts free guided tours for small groups that offer a glimpse into the life of the author of Leaves of Grass. View Whitman’s personal belongings and original letters, along with a collection of rare nineteenth-century photographs.

3. Beautiful Views at Wiggins Waterfront Park & Marina

Camden Waterfront

Stroll along the Wiggins Waterfront Park & Marina to enjoy scenic views of the Delaware River and the Philadelphia skyline. There’s a promenade perfect for barbecue gatherings and the Riverstage, which is home to free concerts and festivals during the summer months. Don’t miss the annual Sunset Jazz Series!

2. Local Fine Arts

Camden Waterfront

In addition to all the outdoor attractions, Camden Waterfront is also brimming with tons of fine arts. Check out choral and orchestral performances at The Gordon Theater or view contemporary American art at the Stedman Art Gallery. And put on your walking shoes for the 3rd Thursday Art Crawl, a monthly event that highlights Camden’s creative art in a pub-crawl fashion. Currently on exhibition at Stedman is “Look Again: The Young People of Camden,” which depicts the inspiring tales of local Camden teens.
