New Jersey Network Features Salem's Tunes from the Crypt

(SALEM, NJ)—New Jersey Network has posted a new podcast featuring organist Joanne Owen discussing the Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission’s upcoming concert, “Tunes from the Crypt,” Friday evening, October 23, 2009, 6 PM. The concert takes place in historic St. John’s Episcopal Church, 76 Market St., Salem, NJ, and is a free event.

“Having New Jersey Network feature Tunes from the Crypt is very exciting,” said Deputy Freeholder Director Beth Timberman. “It is wonderful to have Salem County’s cultural events recognized and publicized this way.”

NJN producer Eric Schultz visited Salem at the beginning of October to interview Owen at the console of the organ at St. John’s. The resulting program offers a taste of the “spooky music” that will be performed that evening, including Bach’s famous “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” and Gounod’s “Funeral March for a Marionette.” The podcast is available for listening and downloading at www.jerseyarts.com/podcast.asp

“When I came down for the interview I was really struck by the evocative beauty of the church and the surrounding graveyard,” said Schultz. “Hearing the organ live reverberating around me in that gothic setting was so powerful – a totally different experience from listening to a recording.”

Spooky Salem Concert . Walking Ghost Tour . October 23 . South Jersey

(SALEM,NJ)—With Halloween fast approaching, the Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission is sponsoring an appropriately bone-chilling evening of entertainment for the whole family on Friday evening, October 23, 2009. “Tunes from the Crypt” features Joanne Koerber Owen at the console of the organ at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 76 Market St., Salem, NJ who has prepared a suitably spooky prelude for the city’s annual Walking Ghost Tour of historic Market St. and the inaugural presentation of “Music Around the County,” a new concert series that will continue next March and April in Daretown and Salem.

“We are really excited to be offering this new opportunity to experience great music in beautiful spaces in Salem County,” said Deputy Freeholder Director Beth Timberman. “The series promises to be an exciting and enjoyable way to hear some of the region’s talented artists, and best of all the event is free.”

Owen is well-known in Salem County and South Jersey as a recitalist. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, she has taught and performed widely throughout the region and for many years as Minister of Music and the Arts at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Salem, where she was named Minister of Music Emerita.
