Generation NEXT: Calvin Berger

Calvin Berger is a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac–stressed out about a nose he can’t hide and a girl he can’t get. With a creative little scheme, some geeky charm and eloquent words, he goes to great lengths to have the star jock deliver his love-struck letters. But what if the girl of his dreams was right under his nose all along…? This classic story of unrequited love and giddy days of young romance, has a sharp-witted script and rock musical score by Richard Rodgers Award-winner Barry Wyner.

YES! There is an After-Party!
After the performance, stick around for an exclusive after-party reception with the Calvin Berger artistic staff, featuring “Burger” sliders (get it?) and a selection of specialty drinks.

JUST ADDED: As part of Friday’s GleeK Night festivities, join us for a bonus KARAOKE SHOWDOWN as part of the after-party. Hang out and watch your friends and other young professionals show off their pipes, and maybe sing a song or two of your own! Click here to register to perform!

Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra

The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978 as an outgrowth of the need for the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries to be broadcast throughout Russia for the benefit of its citizens. It was decided that the orchestra should broadcast performances on a weekly basis. Presently the orchestra follows the European music tradition and does not have a permanent Chief Conductor. Music Director Anatoli Nemudrov invites maestros from Russia and abroad in order to facilitate the continuing development and mastery of the musicians.

Alexei Kornienko, music director

Alexei Kornienko is a deeply committed musician whose musical drive is rooted in a strong sense of loyalty to the composer’s intentions within the score, as well as in a modern responsibility to interpret and demonstrate his individuality in performance. The results of his work are always charged by his personal obsession for music. In 1986, after acting as the Conductor of Concerts for the USSR, Kornienko was appointed professor of piano at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1990, after relocating to Austria, Kornienko was appointed music director of the Collegium Musicum Carinthia chamber orchestra. In 1995, he was engaged as guest conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra before founding the Classical Etcetera music series in 1997. In 2001, he was appointed artistic director of the Worthersee Classical Festival. He was engaged as the music director of the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2005.

Alexander Sinchuk, piano

Alexander Sinchuk began his study of the piano in the Children’s Art School under Elena Kulikova in 1995, at the age of seven and by the age of nine had begun to participate in regional competitions of young musicians, in which he was a winner several times. In March of 2002, he entered and won First Prize in the International Competition for Pianists in Vladivostok, Russia. And in February 2009, Sinchuk made his Carnegie Hall solo recital in Weill Recital Hall.

Julian Schwarz, cello

18-year old Julian Schwarz made his orchestral debut at the age of 11 playing the Saint-Saens Concerto No. 1 with the Seattle Symphony with his father, Music Director Gerard Schwarz, on the podium. Since then he has appeared as a soloist with many of the Seattle area orchestras including the Bellevue Philharmonic, Philharmonia Northwest and the Port Angeles, Eastern and Sammamish symphonies. Recent and upcoming appearances include performances with the Greensboro (NC) Symphony, Lake Union Civic Orchestra, San Diego’s Tifereth Israel Orchestra, and return engagements with the Seattle Symphony and Port Angeles Symphony.

The group performs on more than 140 invented instruments crafted from industrial scrap—ranging from accordion parts to artillery shells, delivering an adrenaline-laced power-percussion performance rooted in street performance, jazz, and world music traditions. ScrapArtsMusic is part of the State Theatre’s winter festival, Hub City Carnivale, three weeks of performances, activities, and attractions for children 1-100. KIDS GO FREE!* Patrons purchasing ScrapArts tickets via phone or at the Ticket Office window will receive one child’s ScrapArts ticket free with every full priced adult ticket purchased. Tickets to the ScrapArts performance range from $32-52 (group, college student, and senior discounts available).

Nelly Furtado will be the headliner at the Victory Ceremonies featuring ScrapArtsMusic.

The Canadian quintet, ScrapArtsMusic, tours the world, transforming their stage into an eco-friendly musical realm vibrant with ingenious creativity and positive energy. ScrapArtsMusic is led by Gregory Kozak, a 21st century Renaissance man and inspired instrument inventor along with percussionists, Gregory Samek, Spencer Cole, and twins, Chao Gao, and Yue Gao. This youthful quintet of virtuosic musicians performs original, beats-driven music with over 145 mobile sculptural instruments. Each instrument is hand-built from recycled materials ranging from accordion parts, to aluminum scraps, and even artillery shells. These beautiful sculptures produce unique sounds for which special performance techniques are developed, giving life to fresh, original compositions with wide-ranging appeal.
