ABOUT GARDEN ACADEMY:
Founded by parents, Garden Academy is a new school for children with autism. Our mission:
- Help children others could not help
- Train new professionals, the next generation of leaders in the field
- Conduct and host research to help improve available treatment options
- Build awareness of scientifically proven-effective treatment for autism
In just a few short years we have grown from three children in a church basement to a fully enrolled school. In addition to the children, 11 Masters Degree candidates are working at Garden Academy to fulfill the clinical requirements they need to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Four research projects are underway and more are planned.
Even more importantly, every day at Garden Academy children with autism are getting the help they need to reach their potential.
The treatment approach used at Garden Academy has been recognized as effective by the U.S. Surgeon General.
ABOUT AUTISM
Autism is a complex neurological disorder which varies in its severity.
Autism affects the ability to participate in life in most every way imaginable … learning, speech/language, social interactions, play, daily living skills. Without help, people with autism exhibit “perseverative” behaviors — behaviors which they may repeat hundreds of times per day (hand-flapping, jumping, yelling, rocking back and forth, repeating the same phrase).
Autism can also result in intense behavioral issues — dangerous, self-injurious and aggressive behaviors.
These behaviors can make it impossible for children with autism, or their families, to do even everyday things like eating in a restaurant, going to the movies, or attending religious services.
While there is no cure for autism, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been proven to make a significant and often dramatic difference in the lives of children with autism.
Garden Academy is a dissemination site of the model developed by the Princeton Child Development Institute.
