Holmdel, NJ (September 6, 2009) – Oktoberfest, one of the best-known cultural events the world over and the world’s largest fair, drawing some six million visitors to Munich, Germany each year, is coming to Red Bank on Sunday, September 27 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on West Front Street.
Oktoberfest, which began almost 200 years ago at the 1810 wedding of Princess Therese to the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, was originally a wedding celebration as well as an opportunity to give thanks for a bountiful harvest and to share the joy of the occasion with family and friends.
Mayor Taps the Keg, Red Bank’s Largest Yodeling Lesson, and Kids’ Games Highlight the AfternoonThe non-profit German School of Monmouth County (http://www.germanschoolmc.org) will host Oktoberfest activities including a traditional “tapping of the keg” kick-off at noon by Red Bank Mayor (Bürgermeister) Pasquale Menna, followed by an afternoon of contemporary and traditional German music and folk dancing, a Swiss Alphorn player, Red Bank’s largest yodeling lesson and contest, a beer stein race, sack races, a pretzel toss and more fun for kids and adults. A traditional German buffet will feature wursts, leberkäse, potato salad, spätzle, red cabbage, sauerkraut and homemade desserts, as well as Spaten beers imported from Munich.
“We have a two-fold reason for celebrating Oktoberfest – first to support the Monmouth County German School, which relies solely on private funding to provide German language lessons to our more than 70 students, ages 2 through 72,” says Middletown resident, German School managing director, and mother of two Dorothea Drew. “Additionally, 20% of New Jerseyans can claim a heritage connection to the German-speaking countries. There are also many expatriates who now live in central New Jersey and want to maintain and share their rich German heritage with the community.”
Advance tickets that include the buffet and all activities are $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for children 16 and under. Tickets at the door are $30.00 for adults and $10.00 for children. Wear a dirndl and receive a $5.00 discount at the door. Please call 1-888-368-5300 or email info@germanschoolmc.org for more information.
