Ridgewood, Bergen County:

July 4: Ridgewood New Jersey has one of the oldest July 4th Independence Day celebrations in the state, at least one of the best documented ones. They have a detailed journal of how their community has celebrated the 4th going back almost 100 years. One of the little bits of trivia from this journal includes the fact that 30,000 people showed up in 1924 just to watch the parade with Civil War veterans and the towns new ambulance.

The 2009 festival features: a flag raising at 9:00 in the morning, a classic all American parade with color guards, marching bands, local dignitaries, civic groups, rescue squads, fire departments, antique cars and floats, an Independence Day Celebration & Concert featuring the Illumination Twirlers, Dad’s Night, Fallin’ Angels Skydivers, a patriotic concert by The Ridgewood Concert Band and to top it all off a fireworks display.

The parade is free. Admission at the gate to Veteran’s Field, the scene of the concert and the fireworks, is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children. Advance tickets are sold all over town at participating businesses. Parking is free and limited handicap parking is available.

Kool & The Gang will perform on the Main Stage on Saturday night, July 25 at 8 p.m. following that evening’s scheduled balloon ascension and in conjunction with the spectacular nighttime hot air balloon glow. The band, led by Robert “Kool” Bell and his brother Ronald Khalis Bell, have sold more than 70 million albums with chart-toppers including “Celebration”, “Ladies Night”, “Joanna” and “Cherish.”

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. and are available by calling 1-800-HOT-AIR9 or online at BalloonFestival.com.

“One of the reasons the Festival continues to be successful year after year is that people see the value in what we have to offer for the price of admission,” said Howard Freeman, Executive Producer of the Quick Chek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning. “Not only do you get to spend a great day with your family, enjoy the magic of ballooning and all of our attractions, you also get to see the biggest names in music perform. Kool & The Gang crosses over into so many genres, they’ll be something for every music lover in our audience.”

Formed in the 1960s with a group of neighborhood friends from Jersey City, Kool & the Gang combined the earthiness of soul with jazz and R&B and hit the pop and R&B charts right from the start. They quickly become known for their live sets and released the first of their 34 Top 10 hits in 1973 with “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging.” Though they won a Grammy award for “Open Sesame” off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the top-selling movie soundtrack of all-time, it was in the post-disco era that they enjoyed their greatest success.

Kool & the Gang had three consecutive albums reach platinum status starting with Ladies Night in 1979. The group then released their smash No. 1 hit, “Celebration,” which would go on to be favored by innumerable wedding receptions, joyous occasions and DJs around the world. They followed with two immense hits, “Joanna” and “Cherish” en route to selling more than 70 million records worldwide with 31 albums going gold or platinum. The R&B anthem Fresh then solidified the group’s international stardom.

5-time Grammy award winner Michael McDonald, one of the music industry’s most talented singer-songwriters, will perform live in concert at the 27th annual Quick Chek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning on Sunday, July 26.

The gold and platinum selling R&B/soul singer and songwriter, known for his award-winning work as a member of The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and as a solo artist, will be presented by PNC Bank at 3:00 p.m.

Possessing a distinctive, husky soulful baritone, McDonald’s hits include “What A Fool Believes,” which won four Grammy awards including Song of The Year and Record of The Year; “Minute By Minute”, “Takin’ It To The Streets”, and “It Keeps You Runnin’.” He is also the creator of such hits as “I Keep Forgettin’,” the Grammy-winning “Yah Mo B There” and the No. 1 pop single “On My Own.”

He also received two Grammy nominations for his platinum-selling Motown tribute album which featured the classics “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” McDonald followed these smash explorations of Motown with the album Soul Speak.

“You just try and pick the songs that are the most meaningful to you,” said McDonald about the inspiration for his latest albums. “These songs span my life, they’re the ones where I can remember where I was when I first heard them, the ones that made me interested in becoming a recording artist, the songs I’d always imagined myself singing.”

“Michael McDonald has an instantly recognizable voice and his songs are so well known by such a wide audience,” said Festival Executive Producer Howard Freeman. “Festival-goers have enjoyed listening to him for many years, from baby boomers going back to his days with the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan to those who know his work with so many of today’s biggest stars in pop music and his recent tributes to Motown.”

Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. and are available by calling 1-800-HOT-AIR9 or online at www.balloonfestival.com.

“We want to give everyone a chance to buy tickets early,” said Freeman, noting that premium seating for pop superstar Kenny Loggins last year and for the Jonas Brothers in 2007 sold out well in advance of the Festival.
