The 2010 Asbury Park Boardwalk Health and Fitness Challenge Announced

Madison Marquette announced today the inaugural Asbury Park Boardwalk Health and Fitness Challenge, a 12-week program designed to promote the health and wellness of Asbury Park and nearby communities. Each Sunday starting February 21, the boardwalk will host free introductory fitness classes, free nutrition and health classes, and feature healthy menu items at boardwalk eateries. Registered participants will receive prizes based on their attendance.

The Challenge is being made possible through the support of two important partners:

Celebrity Chef Diane Henderiks – a leading U.S. nutritionist, personal chef, culinary educator, fitness expert and media personality based locally. Her celebrated Dietitian in the Kitchen™ brand includes cookbooks, signature products and an educational series designed to arm individuals with the knowledge necessary to live a healthy lifestyle. Many area residents will recognize Diane as the host of “Healthy Bites with Diane Henderiks,” a daily health tip segment on News12 New Jersey. Diane and her staff of experts will lead classes at the boardwalk each Sunday at 2 p.m. Topics will include nutrition, keeping the weight off and healthy cooking. Her participation is being sponsored by True Lemon®, the original granulated lemon substitute made from 100 percent all natural ingredients (www.truelemon.com).

Fitness Trainer Brian Wright – a professional martial arts competitor, fitness expert and owner of Real Elite Training Center in Asbury Park. Brian is well known for his ability to translate the essential conditioning, flexibility and strength required for martial arts into accessible classes for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Brian and his staff of experts will lead classes at the boardwalk each Sunday at 3pm. Activities will include yoga, boxing, kettlebells, KickFit and a weightless workout.

Brielle Cycelry will also lead a bicycle ride on February 28 and famed local restaurateur and running enthusiast Tim McLoone will lead a 5K run/jog on March 15.

The Challenge’s fitness and nutrition events will be hosted in space located at the 4th Avenue Pavilion on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. The activities are free for community members. Participants must be 18 years of age and register for the Challenge in order to participate. Registration is conducted onsite prior to all fitness and nutrition classes.

All registered participants in the Challenge are eligible to receive prizes based on their attendance each week. Prizes include special event tickets, rounds of miniature golf, waterpark admittance and Asbury Park merchandise.

Asbury Park New Jersey

February 7, 2009 in This is My Town: NJ by BNJ

Asbury Park New Jersey

Asbury Park New Jersey

Asbury Park is a city in Monmouth County in Central Jersey with a population of 16,930 as measured in the 2000 United States Census. The city was named for Francis Asbury (1745 – 1816), the only Methodist minister to remain in the United States when the Revolutionary War broke out. The town was founded by James Bradley in 1871 as a residential resort. Bradley installed a boardwalk, an orchestra pavilion and a pier. Over the years the Asbury grew more popular and the Palace amusements complex, and several hotels were built. In the 1920’s, the Paramount Theater and the Convention Hall Complex, The Casino Arena, the Carousel House and two pavilions were built.

The city has a reputation for great music. The Stone Pony is a popular venue that has just been restored and is celebrating its 35th anniversary on Valentine’s Day in2009. According to Wikipedia, The Stone Pony was “frequented by Bruce Springsteen” and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes was the house band in the mid 1970’s. In 1973, Springsteen released his first album: “Greetings from Asbury Park”.

Asbury Park is a city that is undergoing a renaissance. It experienced years of neglect and decline. With the energy of a new group of politicians, businesses owners, developers, artists and musicians, the city is coming back to life. This positive vision, attitude and energy can be seen on the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce Website.

The commitment to change and renewal can be seen on the City of Asbury Park Website as witnessed by this statement from Mayor Sanders titled: An Extraordinary City:

“… while undergoing this one billion dollar redevelopment project on the waterfront, four other redevelopment projects are proceeding throughout the rest of the city leading the way to restoring the city as the Jewel of the Jersey Shore.”

You can catch a glimpse of where Asbury Park is headed by looking at their new state of the art flash website that features the Asbury Park Boardwalk here. The new Asbury Park is a city of entertainment and art and music and pride in itself.

Asbury Park has great beaches, great music and a great history. If you have any great stories about or great pictures of Asbury Park, we would love to share them with our readers. Just leave us a comment below. We would love to hear from you.
