2011 NJ Labor Day Weekend Guide

Published in 2011: Our 2014 NJ Labor Day feature is here. For Labor Day weekend in New Jersey, there’s a lot going on in every region of the state; from a Scandinavian Festival in Budd Lake to a jam-packed weekend of fun in the Wildwoods.

You and the kids can check out the three-day Lake Pine Days festival in Medford or a French Circus themed River Festival in Frenchtown complete with a pet fashion show contest.

Labor Day Weekend in North Jersey:

Scandinavian Fest . Sunday . Budd Lake, Morris County, North Jersey:

Scan Fest, the largest Nordic festival on the East coast, returns to Morris County on Sunday, September 24, 2011. This celebration of Nordic culture opens at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning, and continues through 6:00 p.m.  at Vasa Park in Budd Lake. Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair . Monday . Rutherford, Bergen County, North Jersey:

)(Update July 6, 2011: As of today, I cannot find any new information on the event. I will update this as we go along) The Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair is the largest and longest running street fair in New Jersey. The town boasts that the fair  attracts over 25,000 people. The festival features an antique show, craft vendors, a juried art show, and local food vendors. Free concerts also a popular feature of the celebration.

Labor Day Weekend in Central Jersey:

Giant Craft Show . Saturday . Ocean Grove, Monmouth County, Central Jersey:

Ocean Grove will hold its Giant Craft Show on Saturday, September 3, 2011. The show features over 200 artists, craftsmen and craftswomen. It is held outdoors on the Ocean Pathway just steps from the beach. Some of the items offered will be: handspun silver jewelry, gold and jewelry, handmade clothing items like jackets, sweaters, scarves and purses, unique wood, floral arrangements, hand sewn table and bed linens, children’s toys and dolls. The festival also features children’s art and craft activities like sand art and candle making. In addition to the arts and crafts the festival also features local food vendors.

Labor Day Parade . South Plainfield, Middlesex County, Central Jersey:

[Update, July 6, 2011: There is no information on the town web site this year about the fireworks display. I will update this listing as I get more information] South Plainfield will celebrate its 54th Annual Labor Day Parade on Labor Day, Monday September 5, 2011. The parade starts at the Police Athletic League [PAL] Recreation Center on Maple Avenue at 10:00 AM. The parade is one of the oldest and biggest parades in the state. It features bagpipers, clowns, local boy and girl scout troupes, home-made floats and marching bands. There’s also a concert that starts at 6:00 p.m.

Superbike Championship Weekend . Friday, Saturday, Sunday . Millville NJ, Cumberland County, South Jersey:

The most popular event at the New Jersey Motorsports Park is the AMA Pro Superbike Championship. The event is a Labor Day tradition at NJMP for Mid-Atlantic motorcycle race fans.

Labor Day Weekend in the Wildwoods, the Wildwoods, Cape May County, South Jersey:

Mayor’s Labor Day Race . Monday, Ocean City, Cape May County, South Jersey:

This 5 mile run on the beach has been staged for the last 20 years in Ocean City. The 5 mile race starts at 9:00 on Monday morning. Lake Pine Days . Saturday, Sunday, Monday . Medford, Burlington County, South Jersey:

The Lake Pine Colony Club will hold a three day festival on Labor Day Weekend. Saturday and Sunday featured events include: water sports, a baseball game, sandcastle, and pet contests. The water sports include a peanut scramble, sprints, kick board relays, dolphin races, diving contests and canoe orienteering around a water obstacle course. Awards given to the winners of all the events.  On Monday, Labor Day, the town hosts its 71st annual Medford Township Labor Day Parade and Fair. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. at Taunton and Tuckerton and proceeds to the Lake Pine Clubhouse. The parade features Miss Lake Pine, bands, clowns, fire trucks, police cars, decorated bikes and a bagpipe band. The fair is held following the parade on the grounds of the clubhouse. It features games, prizes, face-painting, hot dogs, perogies, a bake sale and a silent auction.
