Wishing You Were Here: Postcard Views of Historic Clinton

Long before the days of emails, cell phones and text messages, people used postcards to communicate with friends and loved ones, often to send a scenic view and greeting while on vacation at a faraway place. For many, postcards with pictures and writing on them were not just mail, they were keepsakes to be saved and enjoyed over and over again.

Postcards documented the cultural landscape of their day. They detailed everything about their time and place, they showed how terrains, towns and streets have changed throughout various regions of the country, how people dressed and how modes of transportation evolved over the years. Postcards provided a pictorial history of America through a unique record of our ancestors’ journeys, lifestyles, and social activities.

This exhibit of picture postcards from the Red Mill Museum Village Collection, together with selections from the collection of Allie McGaheran, brings to life the history of the people and places that were an integral part of the everyday surroundings in the Town of Clinton from the early days of the twentieth century. Many contain handwritten notes reminiscent of earlier times with remembrances of personal experiences and special occasions important in the lives of local townspeople. Wishing You Were Here: Postcard Views of Historic Clinton will be on display in Gallery 1 from February 11 through July 3, 2012.
