2012 Programs, Trips and Luncheons

Feb 20, Allie McGaheran will speak about the Great Clinton FIRE in 1891.

The fire devastated the town and led to the electrification of the mill and the creation in 1892 of the Clinton Illumination Water Company which operated on the second floor of the Mill. Allie has great pictures and stories and as you know is very informative and great fun to listen to. Let’s start off the year with a bang, bring a friend and enjoy Allie’s presentation.

March 19, Miles Arnott director of Bowman’s Wildflower Preserve presents; Bowman’s Hill Through the Seasons.

Enjoy this photographic tour of the Preserve, focusing on the beauty and diversity of plants throughout the year. The 134-acre Preserve features more than 800 species of native plants in a naturalistic setting, ready for you to discover. Explore, from your chair, picturesque woodlands, meadows, a pond and Pidcock Creek set amidst a changing collection of wildflowers, birds and wildlife. After this presentation you will want to visit. April 16,  Richard Pierce

The Evolution of the Stars and Stripes illuminates the personal and historical stories woven into the framework of our nation and highlights events important in the lives of ordinary citizens, creating a repository of the American experience. Drawing upon examples from the Pierce Collection of American Parade Flags, a variety of flags with handwritten inscriptions,  overprints, and those accompanied by personal letters or notes are featured with an emphasis on the stories they tell and the lives they touched. This PowerPoint presentation brings together and recounts many episodes that characterize the spirit of America and honors the flag that symbolizes our individual freedoms and national unity.

April 19, Luncheon  with Peter Osborne at the Grand Colonial

Peter will be speaking and showing pictures about artist John Newton Howitt (1885-1958). Who is John Newton Howitt? You know Norman Rockwell’s name but you will recognize John Hewitt’s pictures just as you do Rockwell’s. His pictures were seen on the covers of: The Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, Top Notch, Adventure, Street & Smith, Love Story, Clues, Detective Story and The Whisperer, Operator #5, Dime Detective, Horror Stories, and Terror Tales, as well as The Spider. In wartime he painted posters for the Red Cross.

Lunch Menu: Mixed Baby Greens, Tomato & Crispy Shallots, a choice of Parmesan Crusted Breast of Chicken, Citrus Crusted Fillet of Sole or Beef Tenderloin Tips with Forest Mushrooms and a Vegetarian dish.   Dessert will be Chocolate Pots de Crème with Fresh Berries. Open Bar.

May 17, Bus Trip Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights, New York.

The Morris-Jumel Mansion  was built by British Colonel Roger Morris in 1765. He and his wealthy American wife, Mary Phillipse Morris, used it as a summer, country house. On July 10, 1790, President Washington dined at the Mansion with members of his cabinet. Guests at the table included two future presidents of the United States: Vice-President John Adams and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton and Secretary of War Henry Knox also attended the dinner.

Luncheon at Coogan’s Irish Pub  Restaurant, menu to be selected there: Garden Salas, choice of  Horseradish Crusted Salmon, Shrimp Scampi, Chicken Piccata, Calfornia Style Vegetable Lasagna, Shepherd’s Pie or Chicken Pot Pie, Dessert Chocolate Cake or New York Style Cheesecake. Open Bar.

May 21, Ruth Claus on Colonial “Kitchin Gardens”.

Herb gardens were absolutely necessary for the early settlers. Take an imaginary stroll through the colonial “kitchin” garden with Master Gardener Ruth Claus. Ruth is a member of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Somerset and Hunterdon Counties.

June 18, Judy Grow Quilts Uncovered

Using examples from her collection of antique quilts Judy will give a brief history of quilting citing the evolution of this domestic art form from the pastime of wealthy women of the early 19th century to use for bedding, through the universal activity of modern times putting quilts on the wall.

September 17, Father Ed Murphy speaking about September 11, 11 years later.

Father Ed Murphy was a Red Cross Chaplain at Ground Zero for the Operating Engineers.  Through artifacts and a slide presentation he will explore the aftermath emotionally, psychologically, physically and spiritually of the men and woman who worked for the 10 months after Sept. 11th, 2001.

October 13, SATURDAY Bus Trip to the New Barnes Philadelphia Facility

On May 19, 2012, the Barnes will unveil its New Philadelphia home in rooms reflective of the intimate layout and unique character of the original Merion galleries, the renowned art collection will be accessible to the public like never before. The new building honors both the legacy of Dr. and Mrs. Barnes and the core educational mission of the Foundation through a series of spaces that maintain the intimate character of the gallery experience while allowing for greater access to the collections and programming. November 19, Jim Drummond Ph.D.  Delaware Township’s Past and Present

Jim authored the book The History of Delaware Township; he is a member of the Delaware Township Historical Society and vice-chairman of the township Historical Advisory Committee, earned his doctorate in American history at New York University in 1979 and taught history at various schools and universities for 47 years.
