New Jersey Motorsports Park officials unveiled three Rally America sanctioned races this year on Lightning Raceway in Millville, New Jersey. Rally America, is a sanctioning body for performance rally racing in North America and is bringing this wildly popular racing to the New Jersey for the first time.

Rally Racing Comes to Jersey

Rally Racing Comes to Jersey

“We are very excited about promoting this fiercely competitive form of racing to this beautiful circuit”, said J.B. Niday, managing director of Rally America, Inc. “Nestled in the heart of New Jersey’s pristine forests and rivers, with the excitement of nearby Atlantic City casinos, the beautiful New Jersey beaches and scenic fishing villages of Delaware Bay we have found a wonderful venue and perfect destination for our dedicated fan base”.

“Many of our top Rally America National Rally Championship campaigners plan to participate in these groundbreaking events”, added Niday. “They include Travis Pastrana, four time Rally America National Champion, and red hot Ken Block, perennial Rally Championship contender, the star of the amazing Ken Block Gymkhana You Tube videos. We certainly anticipate a tremendous turnout of established teams with many new racers coming aboard.”

NJMP Director of Membership and Business Development, Steve Stander said, “This is truly the motor racing version of rugby, combining elements from road racing, short-course off-road racing and X Games-style rally car racing. From green flag to checkered, it’s intense, non-stop action!” All three Rally America events will use parts of the Lightning Raceway in combination with gravel sections totaling about one mile in length. The course will include jumps, unbanked corners, hills and very challenging transitions between tarmac and gravel.

The highlight of each race is the “JOKER LAP.” A special, longer gravel section of the racetrack is built, which each driver must maneuver through once per heat. The Joker Lap duration is at least two seconds longer than a normal lap time. Drivers decide for themselves when they take the Joker Lap. If they fail to take the Joker Lap, or take it twice, they’ll receive a time penalty. It introduces a very strategic component into an already madcap event.

The rally cross format is very popular in Europe with huge spectator turnouts. Six cars start side by side in each of the numerous three lap qualifying races leading up to the main event finale. “This is no holds barred racing with lots of pushing, rubbing and broad sliding through the corners”, said NJMP Track Official Donald Fauerbach. If you like short track stock car racing, you’re going to love this action!”

Two classes of cars will compete in this inaugural year of competition. The faster, all-wheel-drive cars resemble those running in current Rally America competitions; the Subaru Impreza has been the dominant marque. The second category of rally cross cars will be two-wheel drive including many highly modified, 450+horsepower Ford, Mitsubishi, Dodge and Honda speedsters on rally-style suspensions.

“This very exciting form of racing,” Fauerbach continued, “will add a fascinating new dimension to the broad tapestry of Motorsport entertainment available at NJMP.”

Races are scheduled for three weekends; August 28-29, October 2-3, and November 6-7.

Englewood, New Jersey – February 10, 2010 — Do you have a perfect set of pearly whites? Do you get told you have a beautiful smile? Or can you brighten someone’s darkest day just by showing your teeth? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, than this is the contest for you!

A smile is not limited to those who are smiling; it can also have a great impact on those who see your smile. A smile represents happiness among many other feelings. Smiles are exciting, smiles are calming, smiles are funny, and smiles are always positive. They bring confidence and optimism.

The simple curling of the lips is the perfect accent to any face. Yes, we all smile but no two smiles are alike, that is why we want to see who has the Greatest Bergen County Smile. Now those of you who think you have the greatest smile, you now have your chance to enter The Search for Bergen County’s Greatest Smile and win a grand prize worth smiling about.

Remo V. Biagioni, DMD, a general practice dentist with offices in Englewood and Demarest, is sponsoring The Search for the Greatest Bergen County Smile. The Search is open to all residents of Bergen County, New Jersey 18 years of age and older. No purchase is necessary. The Search will begin on February 16th and end on March 19th.

How the Search Works

All entries must be submitted by 12 p.m. on March 19, 2010.

The criterion is simple – the photo must showcase the person’s smile. At the end of the contest, one grand prize winner will be selected and awarded The Greatest Bergen County Smile. He/she will win the grand prize package which includes a “Smile Basket” that includes two tickets to a New Jersey comedy show and a customized teeth whitening treatment from Dr. Biagioni. 2nd Annual Spin for a Child . March 7 . Montclair

February 23, 2010 in 2010 Events, Essex County, Events in NJ, March 7, March Events, North New Jersey, Spring Events, Uncategorized by essexcountycasa

Thanks to the continued partnership and support of Mark Cohen and 3Sixty Cycling Studio, one of the most successful one-day charity drives in the area has become an annual event dedicated to raising the critical funds needed to support Essex County CASA.  As of June 2009, there were 9,100 abused and neglected children in New Jersey who were removed from their homes and placed in foster care.   24% of these children are from Essex County. CASA, an independent, court-authorized, nonprofit organization, works through professionally trained and supervised volunteers to promote the welfare of these children.

Spin for a Child Benefit

Spin for a Child Benefit

Last year, Spin for a Child brought together over 63 local residents and 7 committee members to raise funds and participate in an inspiring spin class at 3Sixty Cycling Studio.  Before it was over, an astounding $47,000 was raised and 100% of the proceeds provided advocate support and a voice to forgotten children in Essex County’s foster care system.

Why Spin for a Child?  Because these children deserve better!  Over the past 23 years, Essex County CASA has had a dramatic impact on the lives of children in the foster care system.  In 2009, CASA advocates served over 680 children, arranged or obtained court orders for more than 3,100 discrete services for foster children, including needed medical, psychological and educational attention.  Without the services provided through CASA, many of these children would fall through the cracks of New Jersey’s overburdened child welfare system.

Karen Burns, Essex CASA’s Executive Director summarizes their current situation. “While Essex CASA has been steadily growing in “reach” providing more Child Advocates than ever, we are not immune to the brunt of the financial crisis.  While most funding is still in place, three long term funders have decreased or eliminated their support. Local corporations are hard pressed and Newark’s United Way is “dark” for grants this year. The immediate state and federal funding horizons look even worse for next year.  Meanwhile, 844 new foster children entered DYFS care in Essex County, and the Judges have asked CASA to take on 212.  The need for CASA services has actually increased during these difficult financial times.  Spin for a Child is big part of the solution.”

In addition to raising critical funds, the Spin for a Child committee is focused on increasing awareness and volunteer support.  During Spin for a Child, the general public is invited to attend a “CASA Open House” at 3Sixty Cycling Studio, which is co-owned by Mark Cohen with partners Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker, and located at 131 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair.   From 1:00-4:30 pm visitors will be able to learn first-hand about the work of CASA from representatives and how they can get involved.

When Bobbi Brown was asked about her support for Spin for a Child, she said, “Spinning is such a big part of my life, so to partner with our friend Cory and spin for such a great cause was only natural. Steven and I hope to not only raise funds, but also awareness of the amount of children in the Essex County foster care system that need support. After all, the more you give in life, the more you get back.”

“CASA allows 3Sixty’s fundraising efforts to have direct contact on children in Essex County,” said Mark Cohen, “When I approach my staff to volunteer their efforts towards this incredible fundraising event the replies are 100% YES across the board.  We are proud and thankful to be associated with CASA.”

How to get involved with Spin for a Child? Visit www.casaessex.org for registration information. Not interested in riding but want to help the cause?  Please consider making a monetary donation to CASA of Essex County. Checks should be made payable CASA Essex County and can be mailed to Michael Slater at 212 Washington Street, Rm 912 Newark, NJ 07102.  Donations are also accepted online at www.casaessex.org.

ABOUT GARDEN ACADEMY:
Founded by parents, Garden Academy is a new school for children with autism. Our mission:
- Help children others could not help
- Train new professionals, the next generation of leaders in the field
- Conduct and host research to help improve available treatment options
- Build awareness of scientifically proven-effective treatment for autism

In just a few short years we have grown from three children in a church basement to a fully enrolled school.  In addition to the children, 11 Masters Degree candidates are working at Garden Academy to fulfill the clinical requirements they need to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts.  Four research projects are underway and more are planned.

Even more importantly, every day at Garden Academy children with autism are getting the help they need to reach their potential.

The treatment approach used at Garden Academy has been recognized as effective by the U.S. Surgeon General.
ABOUT AUTISM
Autism is a complex neurological disorder which varies in its severity.

Autism affects the ability to participate in life in most every way imaginable … learning, speech/language, social interactions, play, daily living skills.  Without help, people with autism exhibit “perseverative” behaviors  — behaviors which they may repeat hundreds of times per day (hand-flapping, jumping, yelling, rocking back and forth, repeating the same phrase).

Autism can also result in intense behavioral issues — dangerous, self-injurious and aggressive behaviors.

These behaviors can make it impossible for children with autism, or their families, to do even everyday things like eating in a restaurant, going to the movies, or attending religious services.

While there is no cure for autism, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been proven to make a significant and often dramatic difference in the lives of children with autism.

Garden Academy is a dissemination site of the model developed by the Princeton Child Development Institute.

New Jersey Furniture Design . Functional Sculpture . Cedar Grove

February 14, 2010 in Essex County, NJ Businesses, North New Jersey, Uncategorized by Guarino Furniture Designs

Guarino Furniture Designs

Guarino Furniture Designs

I enjoy designing and building furniture for corporate and private clients. I also exhibit in galleries and museums.

For me each new design is a small adventure, exploring my imagination and the potential of the material. Like craftsmen of the past, I prefer to perform my work using fine hand tools instead of relying on machines that may technically speed completion, but limit the scope of the design. Machines, while certainly useful at times, can create an artificial distance between the artist and the material. My hands-on approach allows me to let the simplicity of the design reveal itself, creating a piece that imparts serenity and calm, reflecting the tree’s grace and strength. As each design becomes real and tangible, I get a sense of a tree evolving into a new life as a useful piece of art. I’m grateful to be the catalyst for this rebirth.
