Christmas Carol . Food Pantry Benefit . December 18 . 19 . Stockton

December 17, 2009 in 9 Holidays in New Jersey, Central New Jersey, Christmas, Hunterdon County by BNJ

ShopRite of Hunterdon County is sponsoring “A Christmas Carol” to support Local Food Pantries. River Union Stage is presenting this Charles Dickens classic to benefit local food pantries. Admission is free with a donation of food, cash, or check for food pantries in Frenchtown, Lambertville, and Ottsville.

With the demand on local food banks more than doubling, RUS hopes to make a positive impact with a holiday event that gives back to the community. The dramatic reading of “A Christmas Carol” will give audiences the opportunity to experience the beautiful prose narrative as well as the more familiar dialogue of Dickens’ classic work.

The performances will be presented in reader’s theatre style and will feature Todd Lewis returning to the RUS stage, RUS founders Laura Swanson and Keith Strunk, and is under the direction of Carl Wallnau, Artistic Director of Centenary Stage. Food and cash donations will be divided among the three food pantries. Checks made out to a specific food pantry will also be accepted. Visit www.riverunionstage.org or call (908) 996-3685 for a list of needed items and more information about each food pantry.

Pet Photos With Santa . Grande Arcade . December 18 . Asbury Park

December 10, 2009 in Central New Jersey, Christmas, Monmouth County by Katie

Asbury Santa will be in Grand Arcade, located between The Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall, near our extravagant Holiday Tree from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, December 18. Bring your little furry buddy to meet the big guy. Photos with Santa are also available for $10.00.

Like all cities, Asbury Park experienced growing pains and fell on tough times for a number of years. And while the city’s popularity and visitor count declined, the unique entertainment culture that created the city remained. In 1974, the now legendary music club, The Stone Pony, opened its doors for the first time. The Stone Pony hosted … … …

many native New Jersey musicians including Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. Since then, many of the world’s most popular musicians have played The Stone Pony and today it is considered to be one of the greatest rock & roll venues of all times. Venues like The Stone Pony, The Wonder Bar, the Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall have not only helped launch many musicians’ careers but they also contributed to the creation of an entire music genre known as the Jersey Shore Sound.

In 2007, a new chapter in Asbury Park’s rich history began. The Boardwalk started to undergo an extensive restoration process for some of its key historic features, including the Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall, as well as a complete revitalization of the rest of its facilities and the surrounding waterfront area. Today, the transformation is complete and the Boardwalk now combines the original majesty and glory of its past with modern design and sophisticated conveniences. More than 130 years ago, the Boardwalk’s entertainment offerings and universal appeal contributed to the foundation and success of Asbury Park. With its new appearance, improvements and enhanced offerings, the Boardwalk is positioned to help solidify Asbury Park’s future by attracting visitors for lifetimes to come.

Camden County Awarded $2 Million for Energy Efficient Projects

The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Camden County more than $2 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to implement energy efficiency projects. Awarded under the DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program, these funds will support local efforts to lower energy use, reduce carbon pollution, and create green jobs. “The residents of Camden County will see an immediate return on this investment as the energy-guzzling systems targeted as part of our ongoing County Green Initiative are replaced by energy efficient technologies,” said Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. “The funding will allow the replacement of outdated HVAC and lighting control systems in the County Courthouse, Administration Building, Hall of Justice and Parks Administration Buildings.”

Camden County Celebrates National Adoption Day

On Friday, November 20, the Camden County Surrogate’s court celebrated National Adoption Day by making official the adoption of 37 children in a single day, with a reception following the adoptions that included lunch for all the families, agency representatives and judicial staff. Superior Court Judges Charles Rand and Octavia Melendez as well as Surrogate Patricia Jones are leaders in this annual event.
