Steam Heat . A Historical Perspective . NJ Energy . Article #1

Steam from Castle Geyser in Yellowstone . a Wikipedia Photo by Mbz1

Steam from Castle Geyser in Yellowstone . a Wikipedia Photo by Mbz1

By Bonnie Bornstein Fertel [info]:

“I’ve got ::cling cling:: fsssss steam heat.
I’ve got ::cling cling:: fsssss steam heat.
But i can’t get warm without your hand to hold.
The radiators hissin’ still I need your kissin to keep me from freezing each night.”

From the classic Broadway hit show “Pajama Game”-

The words say nothing about a heat pump. No mention of baseboards, furnaces or the like. When the lyricist wanted to evoke images of intense warmth, the metaphor was steam heat. Nothing is as toasty. Steam heat is likened to the embrace of a favorite aunt or grandmother, while more modern forms of heat can be compared to a peck on the cheek from a disliked cousin.

Steam heat in our homes is a byproduct of the industrial revolution. Before electric power was prevalent, factories ran on steam power. Steam boilers and stationery engines provided the means to move presses, lathes, drills and machine tools. Steam engines were the beating heart of the railroads. On large construction sites, there were always “steam shovels” excavating. Obviously, steam is hot, so why not use it to heat the interior of homes. And so the early steam heating systems came to be, in the middle of the 19th century.

Early steam heating boilers for homes were based on their larger industrial cousins. They burned coal, were generally made of steel and ran at very high pressures, often upwards of one hundred pounds per square inch. These early attempts at heating left much to be desired. Explosion of high pressure domestic boilers were common. A steam boiler shooting up from the basement through the roof of a home and landing several blocks away was not unheard of. Thanks to the Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Company, safe, low pressure steam boilers were developed for residential heating systems.

Modern steam heat, popularized at the beginning of the 20th century was the Pentium Processor of its day. Prior to centralized steam heat, homes were heated with fire places, pot bellied stoves and other devices. If you were near the heat source, you were warm. If you were not, well, you froze.

We can see older homes of the period in which the steam heating system was added after original construction. We see steam heat pipes for the upper levels run exposed in the first floor. Systems installed during original construction had piping concealed within walls and floors. So- steam heat was one of the first “luxury” upgrades.

The Borgata

The Borgata

Atlantic City, NJ (October 29, 2009) - Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa offers guests a one-of-a-kind culinary experience on the East Coast with a wide array of restaurants and world-renowned chefs under one roof. On Saturday, November 7th, Borgata will once again present SAVOR BORGATA – An Evening with Borgata Chefs – at The Water Club. This year, each restaurant will be represented with their own culinary station offering guests the rare opportunity to sample signature items and interact with celebrated chefs Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Michael Mina, Michael Schulson, Stephen Kalt, Geoffrey Zakarian, Romeo DiBona, Ron Ross and Thaddeus DuBois. With diverse and innovative approaches to fine dining, several chefs from this celebrated culinary roster recently discussed their favorite fall ingredients and how they like to use them.

Wolfgang Puck – Wolfgang Puck American Grille
Ingredient: White Truffle
Why: White truffles are only available in the fall and winter.
How: Shaved generously on pizza, pasta and risotto.
Recipe: Baked Macaroni and Cheese with White Truffles

Michael Mina – SEABLUE, A Michael Mina Restaurant
Ingredient: Nantucket Bay Scallops
Why: Nantucket Bay Scallops are small, sweet like candy, taste like the sea distilled and have a smooth, almost creamy texture. They are only available from November until the temperature starts to drop below freezing and they quit fishing for them.
How: It is my belief that Nantuckets are at their best completely raw or ever-so-lightly marinated.
Recipe: Marinated Nantucket Bay Scallops with Ruby Grapefruit, Juniper Berry and Shaved Fennel

Michael Schulson – IZAKAYA, A Modern Japanese Pub
Ingredient: Kabocha Squash
Why: I love when the seasons change because it really allows you to eat foods that haven’t been around for most of the year. Summertime is for light foods and now that fall is upon us, I really enjoy squash because it’s a little heavier than the ingredients we have been eating.
How: Great for grilling, steaming, braising or pureeing. Its sweet flavor makes for great desserts
Recipe: Kabocha Cheesecake with Cashew Streusel

Geoffrey Zakarian – Culinary Lifestyle Consultant, The Water Club at Borgata
Ingredient: Quince
Why: It is a luscious, rich and buttery version of a pear-apple and has an almost perfume-like quality when placed directly under the nose.
How: It is best used around November, when it is ripe yet still firm. In my opinion, it should always be cooked as it creates a beautiful syrup when poached with some light aromatics.
Recipe: Quince with Unsweetened Chocolate

Romeo DiBona – Old Homestead Steak House
Ingredient: Acorn Squash
Why: The color and taste is the best in the fall.
How: Cut into rounds, grilled and seasoned.
Recipe: Cinnamon and Espresso Crusted Lamb Chops with Grilled Acorn Squash and Sweet Potato Puree

Thaddeus DuBois – Executive Pastry Chef, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa
Ingredient: Molasses
Why: I like the rich, smoky flavor it imparts into baked goods
How: Molasses adds a great rich, fiery flavor to cookies, breads, ice creams, puddings and candies. It helps make cookies chewy and loaded with texture.
Recipe: Oatmeal Raisin Molasses Spice Cookies

Huge NJ Antiques Warehouse . Architecturals . South Jersey

October 29, 2009 in 5 Best of New Jersey Business Directory, Salem County, South New Jersey, This is My Town: NJ by BNJ

Royal Port Antiques Warehouse in Salem New Jersey

Royal Port Antiques Warehouse in Salem New Jersey

In the Fall of 2003 we opened the Royal Port Antiques in what was known as the South Jersey Farmer’s Exchange, a 12,000 square foot abandoned warehouse along the banks of Fenwick Creek, at the entrance of the historic district of Salem, NJ. With the encouragement of the town and support of the Historic Preservation Commission, we extensively restored the warehouse.

We brought ten years of experience and a vision for the building and the community. We formerly owned the Queen’s Inn and King’s Row Antiques in Mullica Hill, We grew out of our previous locations.

The Royal Port has a handpicked selection of Early American Antiques as well as a unique collection of architectural elements. The inventory includes many 19th century items including blanket chests, rope beds, farm tables, Windsor chairs, baskets, quilts and a great deal of early and interesting treenware and iron. The architectural elements offer those restoring early properties an amazing amount of items needed for restoration projects. All items are tastefully displayed in room setting throughout the unique and spacious building.

In February of 2007 we added a member to our staff, our son Sam. He is with us all the time. You’ll see him at the shop, on deliveries, at auctions and at shows.

Come and visit. You will not only enjoy the beautiful countryside driving to Royal Port Antiques, but you will walk away with many ideas on how rooms can be planned, using early pieces of furniture and accessories. Relax on the large wrap around porch over-looking the water and enjoy the complimentary cookies and drinks we provide for our customers everyday.

Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts

Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts

Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) announces it’s Third Annual Winter “Fun-Raiser” (All Proceeds Benefit SMAPA’s Scholarship Programs) Saturday, December 5th from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at their studios located at 14 South Park Street, 2nd floor Montclair. Admission is $5.

Scholarship assistance is given to students based upon need, interest and ability. It is expected that recipients attend classes on a regular basis and are committed to the discipline of the art form. The General Scholarship Fund supports students in need of tuition assistance. A formal application is submitted and tuition assistance is determined based upon family size and income. The Joyce Copeland Scholarship supports an individual student between the ages of 10 and 12 who demonstrates exceptional ability in dance and related theatre arts for whom tuition assistance is essential in order to continue training. The Performance Workshop Ensemble (PWE) is made up of 1—15 gifted and talented young dancers between the ages of 12-18 from SMAPA. In return for full tuition scholarships, PWE members give back to the community through arts in education concerts.

Ms. Miller says, “We are delighted to feature performances from our Performance Workshop Ensemble, as well as faculty teaching artists Ty Stephens, described as an “electrifying live performance…versatility and creative fire…” by the Philadelphia Tribune, and Corinna Sowers-Adlers, whom the Montclair Times called a talented young-in-age, yet veteran performer, singer, actress and producer. All guests are encouraged to take free demo dance classes, featuring Break Dance, Hip Hop, Jazz, Salsa and Afro Caribbean. The evening would not be complete without activities including both a live AND a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

Because of generous contributions from staff, students, parents and friends, we will also offer light refreshments. We look forward to celebrating with you as you join us in kicking off the Holiday Season. Come and do all your gift shopping while supporting the arts! “
