The Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is joining the Cherry Hill Mall in saluting patriotism and our flag. As part of the national “Old Gloryous Celebration”, patrons of both establishments are being encouraged to show support for our men and women in uniform by flying the American flag on Flag Day.

The Battleship and Cherry Hill Mall are joining shopping malls across the country this weekend by asking customers to sign a pledge card to fly the American flag on Flag Day, June 14. Pledge cards will be available at the Battleship’s store starting on Saturday, May 27th. Card signers will receive a small flag and will be entered to win two tickets to the 4rd Annual Battleship Blast presented by Comcast-Spectacor on July 1st — the ship’s fundraiser that features dinner, entertainment and the best view of the Delaware River fireworks display — or an overnight encampment on the Battleship for a family of four. Pledges will also be available beginning on Memorial Day at the Cherry Hill Mall’s Customer Service and Community counters.

The conclusion of the event will be marked with a Flag Day celebration at the Cherry Hill Mall, featuring patriotic music, uniformed active soldiers and veterans, and local Boy and Girl Scouts. Uniformed active soldiers and veterans will take part in a Color Guard Ceremony, followed by the pledge of allegiance led by local Boy and Girl Scouts. The event will close with the National Anthem. After the celebration, color guard members will demonstrate the proper way to fly the flag.

“We re pleased to participate in this national program to pledge allegiance to our flag”, said Jack Willard, VP, Marketing and Sales for the Battleship New Jersey. “It’s very fitting to be launching this patriotic program on Memorial Day weekend from our nation’s largest and most decorated battleship. We hope residents from the region come out and enjoy and learn about the Battleship New Jersey, show their patriotism by pledging to fly our nation’s flag and remember the brave men and women that have given their life for our country.”

Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, the Battleship will remember our military brethren who gave the ultimate sacrifice with a Naval Wreath ceremony at 12:15 pm on the forecastle (forward deck) under the 16-inch guns. A Color Guard, a small service and the dropping of a wreath as TAPS is played will be done in memory of all U.S. military personnel. The Battleship will also participate in the national moment of silence at 3 pm as part of The White House’s National Moment of Remembrance campaign.

Located on the Camden Waterfront across the river from Center City Philadelphia the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial offers guided and self-guided tours daily, beginning at 9 a.m. with the last tour departing at 5 p.m. In addition to daytime tours, families and youth groups can spend the night aboard the Battleship as part of the overnight encampment program. Guests experience dinner and breakfast served from the chow line in the crew s mess, a tour of the ship, a ride on the 4D flight simulator and the opportunity to sleep in the bunks that the crew of the USS New Jersey once did. Special group packages and event/meeting space are available. For more information, call 856-966-1652 or visit www.battleshipnewjersey.org.
